Thumbs up Playing Surround system on PC.

I just bought my computer and also a brand new home theater system. I connected both the receiver and computer together with optical wires. Well the problem is that when I listen to music, it works good. But when I try to watch a DVD movie and turn it to dolby surround sound. I can only hear the sound effect not the speech/talking of the actor. Yes, I've connected all of the wires from all 6 speakers that I have. If I set it to all speakers, it works good..but I want to hear the surround sound just like in the movie theater. I am using CyberLink PowerDVD to play the DVDs and I also have the full version of it. If you guys know any better program to use then please tell me. I don't see what's wrong. If anyone could help me I would be greatful because you would lose my head ache from solving this problem for weeks!! Thanks

look at the settings on the computer side for the audio card and verify settings and or operation. verify there is a test signal going to each speaker from the pc.

well it's not really a sound card, but it comes stock with my computer. It says something like this on the website of it...8-channel (7.1) audio subsystem with five analog audio outputs and one S/PDIF optical digital audio output using the Sigmatel 9223 audio codec

With that, do a receiver/speaker-side check by plugging the analog outs to to the 5.1 analog inputs on the receiver.

my portable has a spdif optical connector, it goes to a creative audio deocder box and then to creative's 7.1 giga speakers. in a previous life i had a desk top sound card who's outpput went to the speakers directly

it could very well be the dvd playback software you have, even the dvd. do a two cows search for software?

but

also ck the software on the pc controlling the built in sound card.

also verify the deocder you are using is setup correct. not only mode settings but levels as well.
