I hope that we can keep politics where it belongs, out of the S2000Online forum.

Because Scott there are many other places online where it is perfectly appropriate to discuss politics. And I'd be willing to bet that they steer clear of S2000 issues.

I think what is lost in this discussion is that people visit this site to discuss "whatever" with other S2000 owners. This could cover specific S2000 issues or it could cover any of a tremendous amount of non-S2000 issues that we see here in the off-topic forum. We have "Off-Topic" purportedly for this purpose right? I never got the impression that this site was only for S2000 people to talk about the S2000. Of course that is our passion as what we most talk about. However, people naturally also want to engage in other discussions with people that have a similar interest (i.e. the S2000). It is all part of getting to know people you may never meet face to face. It is what builds character, site loyalty and friendships. Going to a different site to discuss defeats the purpose of wanting to discuss it with your fellow S2000 community members who may also want to discuss it.

I just think that it's a waste of bandwidth here.
I'm reminded of the old saying "there's a time and a place for everything".

I wonder if there might be a way to separate stuff like current world events from "traditional" politics and inflammatory stuff. I would love to continue seeing discussions on world events and such (e.g. the China situation thread), but discussions on the usual hot topics like politicians, gun control, and abortion don't ever lead anywhere constructive and just piss people off. Unfortunately I don't know if we can separate the chaff from the wheat on this one. I'll vote "no" and instead move that the moderators take a somewhat liberal interpretation of the phrase "political discussion."
Incidentally, I'll add that I've been very interested in reading the responses that people have had to the China thread...particularly those of the members of our community of Chinese/Taiwanese/Asian/non-US-in-general descent whose perspectives may be significantly different from my own. I checked the forum on this topic on the ABCnews.com site, and found it had degenerated into a bunch of racist name-calling and flaming...it's nice to have an enlightened, educated discussion every once in awhile. I'll shut up now.
