Sony's online will be free. Xbox live that I bought was $65 for a year. Not a big difference to me but free is a nice selling point.
Sony will have to finance it somehow, so I can only speculate that downloads will be more expensive on Sony's system than Xbox live to recoup the cost.

I was really into playstation and was definitely going to wait for the PS3, but I haven't seen much this week to get me excited about the PS3. Crazy price, no rumble in the controllers, and the usual Gran Turismo promised early release date that will be pushed out at least 9-12 months in the end. I'm not rushing out to buy an xbox 360 either, but I'm definitely not as gung-ho PS3 as I was before. I'll be waiting until I get an HDTV before getting a new console so that's at least a year or two off.
As for blu-ray being a big deal, I don't buy it. DVD's helped the PS2 because everybody already had TV's that worked with DVD's. Blu-ray isn't anything but a more expensive DVD for someone with a regular TV and that is the vast majority of TV's in use today. DVD's were a revolution with being able to jump around scenes quickly, no rewinding, doesn't wear out, better surround sound, and a better picture. Blu-ray is just an evolution of the DVD and with all of the DVD's that people already own and the lack of installed HDTV's, I just don't see the big stampede to adopt blu-ray or HD-DVD. Yeah, if you want blu-ray, the PS3 might be a good way to get in earlier and cheaper, but I don't think that will be a big enough market to decide this chapter of the console wars. I just hope that the PS3 can play blu-ray disks a little quieter and easier than the PS2 played DVD's. I hated listening to the fan in the PS2 everytime I watched a DVD so I got a real DVD player a year later. I can't imagine too many people who have invested in a setup worthy of blu-ray will want to deal with a problem like that either.

Xbox will win. The gaming demographic is getting more mature and the Xbox appeals more. Sure Playstation has tons of games - like YuGiOh 1 thru 10 which my 8 year old brother loves, but seriously....
Also, Grand Theft Auto is now Xbox exclusive....

Second, I can justify the PS3 on account of it's Blu-ray drive alone. PS2 looks horrible on a high def television because of the nature of fixed pixel dimensions. I purchased a 1080P television in anticipation of the PS3/Blu-Ray.
Blue ray wont be a big deal the same way that DVD players in PS2/Xbox were not. Market analyst thought that it would be a big deal, but in the end DVD standalone player sales still soared. Furthermore, XBOX announced that an HD-DVD addon will be available for the 360.
While some might believe that 360 sales on ebay topping 1k days after release show that people will pay for the PS3, I do not think that lots of people can afford to pay to price. Hell, from my eyes, it is already happening with the 360. I am a college student and very few people I know have a 360 some months after release. Such was not the case with XBox/PS2...they were more accessible to a larger demographic.
While i believe the PS3 will sell well, this round of console wars should prove to be the tipping point.
Microsoft is now dictating to Playstation, instead of vice versa. There is a reason the Playstation 3 will have a hard drive and xbox like controllers. Furthermore, where as Playstation have a stable of aging/dying game franchises (Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy), Xbox now has halo 3 yet to be released (which will be a smashing success, and the new GTA games.

Gran Turismo is a dying franchise? Saids who?
I actually think the tilt feature in the controller is VERY cool. Also, I cant wait for Warhawk to come out. That is still one of my favorite games.
IMHO, although I dont think its a dying franchise, it is very boring. They need to do something with the game to freshen it up.
(the problem is, the game is too real) There arent new tracks built every year, and only a handful of new cars, so all that gets updated, are the graphics.

Xbox like controllers? The new PS3 controllers are almost identical in design to the PS1 and PS2 controllers.

"So if you wanted to be a cynic, you could say that this is a wireless PS2 controller with analog triggers like the Xbox, a central guide button like the Xbox 360...."
I say Gran Turismo is a dying franchise, for many of the same reasons that NFRs states. No damage in GT is simply lame, and games like TOCA Race Driver offer more realism and diversity. Furthermore, GT (without compareable online play) is significantly handicapped compared to xbox racing games.
To me, it seems like the content available for the xbox is "fresh", but that is just my view.
Well, GT has room to grow. Damage and better driver AI would help a lot. The AI has always been awful (e.g. black-flag-worthy take-overs of the racing line and getting stuck at pit entraces).
