Pulled Over & Discriminated
Well... If you feel like you've done absolutely NOTHING wrong, and are a minority... (I have no idea how this would hold up--- lawyers respond!?)... Consider buying a $20 small recorder and indicate to the officer as he approaches that this conversation is being recorded-- on the recording so that both parties (You and he) are aware of the recording. There-after (assuming you truely have done NOTHING wrong...not drunk...just pulled over for honestly nothing).. you have a massive amount of verbal evidence against the officer.
-- Perhaps "JDM??" (the officer) could respond to this. I suspect it may really cheese off some-- but if you are REALLLLY innocent, sober, car is 100% fine..did nothing wrong..etc. I would think this might make the cop back off.
Dunno,
Aaron

You seem like a nice enough guy and I'm sure you are sincere. I'd like to know your thoughts on a few ideas:
1. I think the younger guy's training is much more focused on command and control leading to a much more oppressive/negative experience for citizens and a much higher liklihood of conflict and excess. Training in Western Europe is much different.
2. Back when you came along, PDs were looking for fairly bright guys. We all know about the intelligence test that looked lower. Looking for go-along guys makes a big difference in their abilities.
3. More than a few officers hold the mentality that they are the only thing preventing total societal chaos. Everyone would be a criminal if they weren't afraid of law enforcement. Another dangerous way of thinking that fosters excess.
4. The "beat the runners rule" is still widely in effect.
5. A higher proportion of officers (my guess) of all races are racist than in the general public. (See also 2.) At least 4 PDs here in the Washington area have had documentable evidence of widespread racism this year.
6. Quotas don't exist but officers who don't write violations don't get promoted. Probable Cause happens most at the end of the month.
7. Everyone knows the bad or dangerous officers in your PD. Many fellow officers are afraid of them.
8. Racial profiling is thought as acceptable "playing the odds" but it is really making the odds.
9. No one under 25 should ride alone.
That said, I generally agree with everything you said. Just don't sugar coat it too much.

sOMETIMES THESE PIGS HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO WITH THEIR TIME. YOU CANT EVEN FILE A COMPLAINT BECAUSE YOU KNOW THE NEXT TIME THAT COP SEES YOUR CAR HE WILL MAKE SURE HE SEES YOU DOING SOMETHING WRONG
I'm Asian (29) and live in NJ. Officers I've come across have always been professional.
It's typically the few bad apples that ruin it for the rest.
Also, PBA card works wonders.
Since driving my S2000, I've been pulled over twice (speeding and red light). Both times, the policeman let me go with just a warning after flashing my PBA card.

So you are recommending a bribe as a way to have a professional interaction?

In terms of professionalism, I was referring to their behavior and treatment toward me which was with respect as an individual. And yes, this was before my 'bribery' (showing my PBA card).
Even 10 years ago while pulled over for speeding on my Kawasaki, the officer treated me very professionally. (no PBA card)
Of course, there's always exceptions. As many people (of all races) have stated on this board, officers are human too and there will be racists among them.
I've met S2KFAN and I wouldn't call his appearance in our car suspicious, but that body kit probably is. Maybe he saw one us running at warp speed on the highway and was saving up his angst.
Young S2k, I'd have had that cop's name and badge number before he had a second chance to question it, and I'd have had him calling his superior on duty to the scene. I hope you got that name and badge number anyway, because you should report him.
To address the age issue, the oldest at last count was Strbrd, an owner in NJ who is 73. The youngest is 16, and there are any number of 16 yr olds on this board.

Explain to me how that becomes a bribe?

Some people buy out of fear of retaliation (just like with the fire department.) Most people, I believe, buy them as get-out-of-a-ticket-free cards, which is fine BTW. Every charity gives special consideration to supporters.
I just don't think a donation should be required to receive, or expect to receive, fair treatment. You've said it is not. I believe you. But I stick to my guns: In all my trips through NJ, I never saw a person outside of his or her car during a traffic stop who wasn't black. Something is amiss....
