I think this is a complete misconception that a cop pulls you over for driving a sports car or because the car's red/yellow/etc. A cop does not have time to look at the color/make/model of the car while he's looking at the speed reported by his laser gun. He's only looking at the display and he sees a car speeding and he pulls it over - it's that simple! Try standing by a highway and watch cars going past you doing 70 mph, you'll see how fast they go by.
If I'm speeding, I'm doing something wrong and deserver to pay for it. What everyone else is doing on the road does not change this FACT.
Cars are made for driving, not speeding. When you speed you don't just put your life in danger but others as well. The thing with speed is it reduces reaction time and whether or not a car's made for speed has nothing to do with it.
I think you just hate cops. They are actually very nice people and I have full respect for them for doing their duty in protecting us. They don't have an easy job and we should try to help them instead of criticizing.
====================
HOWEVER... when a cop makes a decision to pull over a car, the only 'variable' in the equation is the type of car, since the cop does NOT know who is driving either car and what their driving ablility is.
SINCE all else is equal, he should be obligated to choose the vehicle which is not made for speed.
Unfortunately, the cop will almost ALWAYS choose the sports car. That-does-not-make-sense. PERIOD. That is wrong. That... is profiling. And profiling is ILLEGAL.

Ok, in reponse to the last few posts
A) YES, BOTH the Explorer AND the S2000 should be pulled over. I AGREE!! But again, this post is a REALITY CHECK. The fact is that more often than not both the Explorer and the S2000 will NOT be pulled over. Only ONE will. And guess which one that will almost always be....
(and no, the only variable in the situation is the vehicle. If both cars area going the same speed, the only variable is the vehicle. It should not matter who is driving.. that's profiling! The cop does not have the knowledge of which driver is a 'better' driver, therefore he has no means (and no right) to profile one vs. the other based on the driver)
B) Actually no, an SUV does not handle 'just as well' as an S2000. If someone were to cut you off at 60mph, and you had to swerve into the next lane to avoid it... which car would you rather be in?? UMMM... the S2000. NO questions asked. PERIOD. The sports car is much more responsive in a situation where a fast reaction is required to maintain control. The sports can also come to a stop MUCH more quickly than a 5000lb. SUV. Trying to argue against this is completely futile. I hope you can see that. If not, I feel sorry for you.
C) How fast was I going? I have been pulled over many times for speeding. Many many times. Plucked right out of a pack of cars. One time I remember was in my Prelude, doing 65 in a 55, coasting along next to a Jeep Cherokee. I got pulled over, he didn't. We were going the exact same speed. (And by the way, I have more than 200k miles under my belt, I am from NY and I now live in DC - so almost all of my highway driving is urban... and guess how many accidents I have been in. NONE.. NOT ONE. Yet my driving record would show me as a 'risk') There are PLENTLY of bad drivers who drive slow and are likely to cause accidents. 'SLOW DRIVER' DOES NOT EQUAL 'GOOD DRIVER' and 'FAST DRIVER DOES NOT EQUAL 'BAD DRIVER'
D) And no, it's not easy to just waltz into court and declare 'not guilty' and walk out with 'no fines or points'. I have spent plenty of time in a court room watching people try to do that. It NEVER happens. They will ALWAYS believe the cop over you. And again, they need the money.
Speed limits should be enforced in areas and in conditions where it truly matters whether you are doing the 'limit' or going 10 over. Cops don't set up on rainy days cause they are needed elsewhere??? LOL. They don't set up cause they know not as many people will be 'speeding' (cause it actually is dangerous to), and because they don't want to get wet out there talking to you! Hey, I KNOW A COP! And no, he wasn't telling me to speed when it rains. He was telling that IF you are speeding when it rains, you are MUCH less likely to get caught.
EXACTLY - wet roads plus fast driver = dangerous. Which is exactly why THAT is when they should be out there enforcing the limit. Hey, sorry if you don't get enough tickets to meet your precious 'quota', but at least you truly 'protected and served' that day!
If a pack of cars are all going the same speed.. and only one has to be chosen out of that pack; the car that is made for speed, that is less likely to lose control, and that will do the least amount of damage to innocent people and property if it were to lose control is the one that MUST be pulled over.

jeffrplant,
a - The reality is that you don't understand the point. In your made up world of evil cops, you believe they target the poor owners of sports cars. In reality, its all about human nature and the circumstances of the situation.
b - True a sports car will outperform a SUV in all areas, speed, handling and braking distance. It's a given. What is the variable is the driver and their skill.
c - I'm sorry that you're an "insurance risk". Let me make out my violin and my box of cookies! You admit to speeding. 65 in a 55, right? You were breaking the law. So what makes you special that you think justice hasn't been done in your situation? You broke the law, and you're paying for it.
d - Hmmm... I've been pulled over MANY times, probably more than most here, for speeding. At most, I have paid $40 in "court fees". No school, no points, ever. Yes, many morons go to traffic court and just plain lie. "Oh I was going with the flow of traffic." BULLSHIT. May I suggest next time, you take your ticket to a lawyer, maybe the Ticket Clinic.
Not too long ago (and I posted the story), there was some kid street racing in his sports car, I believe it was a Mustang GT. Lost control and crashed. He killed his own mother, who was driving in another car, unaware what was happening.
You speak of "the car that can do the least amount of damage". Hmmm now go tell that to this kid who killed his own mother in his Mustang.

[B](There!
So to summarize.
1. We all agree that if you break the speed limit you should get ticketed if caught.
2. That cops should not pick out one car more than others.
3. Cops are supposed to ticket based on laws set in place by us and not decide which laws should be enforced in their own opinions.
Now jeffrplant,
What audit process do you suggest to make sure all cops administer the law equally? I think that is your real issue here anyway. Please don't say you aren't going to do anything or don't have ideas. If you don't have any ideas or actions in mind then all you are doing is bitching and I think you got that done in your very first post.

You just don't get it. And sadly, you never will.
I am not saying that it's OK to street race. So stop putting words in my mouth to try and make your point.
Yes, I admit to speeding. 65 in a 55. I was indeed breaking the law. But, the Jeep was breaking the law worse than I was. It is NOT a black & white issue. That's where you and I differ.
Done the lawyer thing.. they can get it reduced, but it seems pretty damn rare to get it revoked. You have been very lucky, I wish you even more luck in 'getting away' with your speeding.
The greater good, my friend. I am not saying that 2 lives are unimportant. I am saying that 8 lives are more important than 2. Can't argue with math, buddy.
The variable is NOT the driver - the officer has NO MEANS to judge the driver's skill level. All they know is 2 things: 1) How fast are these vehicles driving and 2) what kind of vehicles are they.
By the way, your marshmallows are burnt and soggy
