Default "ripping off the gov't" - landlords / contractors

so we all know welfare and assisted housing sucks and the receipeints get free stuff despite breaking the rules, having big screen tv's, etc.....

It is easy to pick on the lower class and say how lazy they are, but on the flip side I have met some pretty sleazy people as landlords who charge CRAZY rent and the gov't still pays.

How about charging $800-$1000 a month for section 8 ghetto living! One guy who does that is also a contractor and got paid $15k per house to do "LEAD ABATEMENT". His actual lead abatement cost was about $3k but he got the full $15k (just dummy up a bill and free $). He has done this with several houses.

Someone should step in and audit the landlords as well the welfare receipients

I am sure there are bigger and better examples out there....cough...Halliburton...

I know someone who has a gov't contract to watch kids on the weekends... no kids ever show up so it is just free $.... doh!

Apparently this subject isn't nearly as popular as poor bashing.

Since we're talking about abuse of the systems, I'd be curious to know specific dollar amounts - the amount of money that is scammed by the service recipients vs. the service providers...

Egregious property and business owners show up to the $5K/plate campaign dinners. Don't bite the hand that feeds.

It would be interesting for sure. All i ever hear about is "all the lazy welfare people".... it is rare that anyone bitches about the white collar scumbags....

Just this one guy has 5-10 houses... he charges about $200 more per month per house than I do... so that is $2k per month extra on just 10 houses.... that is 3 families that he is screwing out of their free rent.....

it's good to be the king...

the guy deserves the extra money if he has to deal with section 8 tenants.

are you asserting that the landlord is doing something illegal or committing fraud? or is what he is doing considered a dark shade of gray?

"market" rent is $600 for a decent house in the ghetto.... for section 8 i charge $50 more just because I know they are going to **** it up eventually.

the rules allow you to ask anything you want and i guess depending on the case worker they will make it happen. So these dicks ask $800-$1000 for houses that would normally rent for $600-$650.

For $1k you can get a nice house in a nice neighborhood that is out of the city.

On top of that, it is one of those "who you know" things for the lead abatement. The contractors get paid $15k max (which they always max out) to get rid of the lead in any house, including their own..... so you pick up a shell for $10k, use the $15k to complelty ghetto renovate it and claim it was all lead abatement with some dummy invoices listing $1k windows (the windows they use are $100each at lowes), $3-4k to paint (they spray the place since it is vacant and not carpted so the actual cost is $300 in paint... etc......

So in the end they basically have a $10k house that they charge $800-$1000 for the rent..... multiply that by 10 units and it adds up very quickly.....

I am sure there are much bigger stories than this kind of shit but it is still funny how the tenants are always "ripping off the system" when many of the landlords do it worse than the tenants.

"market" means whatever the market can bear. if he can get away with charging more that is the new "market." there is a reason why he does it. the premium comes from the added risk he must take. your average section 8 tenant is likely to not only @#ck up your place but may also require an eviction to get them out... where I live it runs about 800-1000 per eviction (legal fees+paperwork+lost rent).

my parents own some rental properties in the ghetto and charge rent weekly for rooms. when you add up the weekly rent, it usually comes out to about 10%-15% more of what the assumed monthly market rate is. the reason the tenants pays this is because usually they can barely put down any sort of deposit and have shit for credit rating and cant rent in any decent place.

as far as getting projects along and running and getting things approved by the city, lets just say if you are a contractor/property manager, you should be sending gift baskets to code inspectors every xmas! and sending gifts to secrataries so you paperwork moves along...standard practice

and for the 15k claim, sure there are actual costs for the physical items, but how much is labor worth? if one wants to finish a project in a week vs a month how much more money in labor is that gonna cost? how can you audit the cost of labor if your laborer's technically don't even exist in the country???

the gov needs to give out the 15k otherwise nobody would pick up the projects, if there was no money to be made.

they are not ripping off the system, they are working with the system. they are adding value not detracting from it.

[QUOTE=trainwreck,Jan 16 2008, 05:33 PM] "market" means whatever the market can bear.
