School me on Vonage
I can even handle an occasional glitch here and there. The main problem is that my wife is from Hawaii, and she gets a weekly call from her dad in Honolulu. If that one does not get through because the service bites, guess who is in trouble. The call comes on sunday mornings so it is not like it is during heavy internet traffic.
If that is not a problem and I can keep my number, sounds like a nice deal. From what I read it is worth it to shell out $70 for the motorola adapter because, at least from the reviews I read, eliminates a lot of the phantom buzzing and bad voice quality that people right about with cheaper units.

I'm thinking of Sunrocket - $199/yr for unlimited domestic calling...
.I haven't had any service glitches. Once in a while (maybe once a month) you'll have to reset the little Sunrocket Gizmo, otherwise no other servicing required. I get no phone bills either.
I've got DSL but get the service through a "dry loop". So I can only use the landline for DSL. Rate is $10/mo + $29.99/mo for dsl.
I've matched Sunrocket with a Uniden Dect 6.0 phone. Perfect package, best cordless I've ever had.
For VOIP I use Skype, since its free and works great for me, but I have hi-speed access. You don't get 911 or any chance to keep your current number, but as long as the internet is up you can dial out to the world for 1-2 cents per minute.
I use my cell phone for 90% of the time and I never understood why people would pay so much for VOIP, but I might be missing something.
When I travel Skype is great since I can call out through my laptop and save a lot of money on international dialing.

skype badness:
-No fax service. usually i scan the document into a pdf and email attach it
-You can never be 4sure the quality of the voice at the other end. i think they give the caller priority and degrade the other end first.
-works best with a usb head set but winXP in general has difficulty switching between your sound card and the head set.
-Their windows XP application has an average user interface, 4example the volume control is buried, hard to find in the menu system. there seems no way to clear some status reporting.
skype is not new. they have come a long way just in the last year and even further in the last 6mo. they are continually improving their service. as much as something like this can do they have a genuine interest in the individual customer.
i have not had a phone line at the house in 4years.
