1080p is a complete waste of money since they only thing that will play those resolutions = Blu Ray and PS3. From 10 ft back you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, 1080i might have rendering issues with fast action sports, but I've never read any solid complaints.
I can tell a slight difference between 720p and 1080p, but I would agree, once you get to 720p, the difference is not that big of a deal to justify any added cost.

I am getting a 1080p just because I want a bigger screen in the new room I am finishing and I might as well get the top of the line with an HDMI input for future needs. But to me, even the difference from the "ghetto" 1080i to 1080p does not seem to be that big of a whoop.

My son in law has both, I have DLP.

The Plasma seems to be brighter but the LCD seems to render fine details much better.

After seeing both of his side by side I have looked in the stores and that seems to be true there as well. I was in Costco the other day and in the same size screens it was easy to spot the LCDs as the picture wasn't quite as "muddy".

Keep in mind that is a comparison thing as I don't think the Plasma puts out a muddy picture when compared to old school tvs, it is just in comparison to the LCD when you look at the details.

The problem with this discussion is that this information is changing so rapidly that right now neither is "better". What vader said about viewing angle was true until the newest LCD t.v.'s came out with something like 175 degree viewing angle.

Also the Plasma burn in has been updated in the latest models making that less of an issue. The only short answer that will mean anything, is that right now it seems there are more possibilites with the LCD technology. They are making dual vision t.v.'s (if you look at it from the right its one picture, but from the left it's completley different.) They are also making paper thin flexible scrrens in LCD.

The only real way to compare is a certain t.v. vs. another t.v. There are just too many variables from one model t.v. to the other to say that it is the LCD or Plasma that makes it.

Dont want to get into it again, since the last plasma vs LCD thread got locked...so..

If you take a top of the line plasma (Pioneer Elite or whatever), top of the line LCD, and top of the line DLP, the plasma will beat them all.

but a CRT will beat even that.

too bad you can't get a big CRT

IMO, LCDs color accuracy is pretty dodgy, even on the good ones.

Me, I plan to go with a 1080p LCoS set like the Sony SXRD or JVC HD-ILA. I think they look great.

Can you even get 1080p plasmas? I know I have seen plasmas with a 1024*1080 resolution, but that is NOT 1080p. With a square resoution like that that offers about the same resolution as 720p.

34" Sony XBR960 FTW! Tubes rock!

IMO, DLP > plasma for simple fact you dont have to replace the gas and also deal with slow degradation of color once gas starts running low.
No replacement of gas in plasma. Also the degredation is not much faster than that of a regular crt.

Seriously though, I feel plasma offers a better overall picture in comparison to the other technologies.

Just as someone said earlier, once you bring in the top of each technology pioneer elite plasma, sony xbr lcd, samsung led 1080p dlp. Side by side the majority will pick plasma due to color, shadow detail, motion and so on.

I am somewhat biased though w/ 2 42" plasma, 1 34" tube, and a 32" lcd. Phosphur based technologies FTW baby! 1 of these plasmas i use for the xbox 360 and ps2 only, little to no tv or movie has been watched on it and no burn in issues at all.

I do agree on the 1080p vs 720p. 50" and above it would be worth it unless you sat too far away for it to be worth it.

Can you even get 1080p plasmas? I know I have seen plasmas with a 1024*1080 resolution, but that is NOT 1080p. With a square resoution like that that offers about the same resolution as 720p.
Yes the new 50" plasma lines are now doing true 1920x1080p, pretty expensive though, Pioneer, Panasonic, soon for samsung and lg

If money isn't an option... I'd get one of the Pioneer Elite Plasmas, those are straight baller.

But one thing I'd recommend is a proper breakin for the Plasma.

They sell DVD's which cycle colors over time. You have to run it for 12 hours or so. It'll cycle all the pixels properly so the color load is perfect and it'll insure color accuracy and longevity for whatever 50,000 hours halflife of the plasma.

Of course with an LCD you can skip all that.

1080p is nothing more than marketing BS. Point of diminishing returns guys.
