They certainly help to perpetuate stereotypes, but I don't think jokes reinforce them. If no racial/stereotypical joke was told for an entire generation, the knowledge of such stereotypes (i.e. those often referred to in jokes) would greatly decline. Only those who are truly racist would pass these bits of info onto their kin.. for everyone else, they are simply.. jokes. Obviously the line between the two is practically invisible and only the one who verbalizes the stereotype/joke knows his true intent.
Anywho, with that said.. I still don't care, nor wish to stop hearing racial jokes from my friends
of course this only applies to negative racial stereotypes. not all stereotypes are bad, and many are true.
