Tasteless Jokes: Who's At Fault Really?
yeah we spun this off topic pretty good. lets try to keep it on track.
So if someone tells a joke based on race or creed and you chuckle...are you guilty of something?? does it make you a racist or a biggot by default?
Are you insensitive or do you simply have enough experience to find the humor in a series of words that ultimately play upon a stereotype of a group of people?
Think about it...why do stereotypes exist? Are they made up by evil people trying to undermine a race or creed? Or, are they based on some shred of truth and then simplyfied and perpetuated.
Allow me a moment of inconsiderate demonstration. i want to dissect a somewhat benign racist joke. I need to type it out so bear with me:
How do you babysit a black child?
You wet their lips and stick them to a window.
OK, there is a prime example of a very insensative and racist joke. Is it funny? Is is based loosely on truth? Do Black people have larger lips than Asians or Caucasians? Does the mental image of somebody, anybody, being stuck to a window by their lips seem funny? Does the fact that the example here is of a black person make it funny?? You decide.
Lets say Chris Rock was on stage and said some thing like this:
"I went over to my aunt Maxine's house last weekend and she asked if I could babysit little Charlie. I said no problem. As soon as that bitch left, I sprayed little charlie's lips with water and stuck his ass to the window. He talks too much..."
I spiced that scenario up a bit because Chris Rock is notorious for being disrespectful to women and a liberal user of profanity. i wanted to make it seem as real as possible
Now, does the joke seem funnier coming out of the mouth of a Black person?????? If so, why. Is it more "real" coming from a black person? Does the fact a black person is saying make it OK to laugh at it? I would say no.
I think people laugh at racial jokes and demeaning jokes because the jokes weave funny statements around stereotypes. Whether you are racist or not, you have preconcieved notions or first hand knowledge of stereotypic information about different people. If someone draws upon that knowledge, in joke form, you will most likely laugh. It does not make you any better or worse of a person IMHO.
White People cant jump <---true or false? if it was the punch line of a joke would you laugh at it? It was good enough to be the title of an entire movie, why cant it be the punchline to a funny joke??
To answer that, we would have to get into to reverse racism and how there is a cataclysmic double-standard in the world regarding Black on White Vs. White on Black racism. But that is far too broad and volatile a topic for this thread.
Sorry, I felt inspired to write this morning. Am I a good person or a bad for laughing whenever I find something (any something) funny?

One a scale from 1-10 (one being a joke they'd say on Christian channel and ten being you should go to jail for being so offensive), how would you rate this one:
Whats better than winning a gold medal at the Special Olympics?
Not being retarded.

The only jokes on Christian channels are usually the people themselves.
Here's one that made me cringe when I heard it over the weekend:
What's the difference between a dumptruck full of bowling balls and a dumptruck full of babies?
You can get the babies out with a pitchfork.
