I don't want to move back to the south for a while, but this is all true. And in most areas, housing and COL is dirt cheap, so being single with a $50k salary will let you feel like a king if you've just graduated.

Wisconsin is the state I never thought I'd go to and now I absolutely love. My inlaws have some places up there on a lake (WAY up there by Eagle River) and it's awesome. Snowmobiling in the winter and boating/jetskiing in the summer. The woods of WI make the suburbs of Chicago bearable.
