Do it! 8000 should be enough if you stay away from gambling. The summers are tough, the polar opposite of your winters. Good luck.
Yea im a horrible gambler, I might as well walk into a casino and hand them my $ and leave hahahaha

Im a cad designer in the engineering/ architectural field. I would Like to find something in that field. I would work anywhere in the beginning just so I had some money coming in but would like to get back into my career.

Ok as it is now I am 27 and live with my parents. The time has come to leave the nest and venture off on my own. I currently live in NY (long island) and would like to relocate to Las Vegas, Nevada. Ive been there and fell inlove with it the minute i stepped off the plane. NY is too expensive to live on your own, I cant do it by myself.

My bills only include my s2k payment, insurance for the car, my cell phone and my CC payment. All together approx $1000 a month. I would be taking my S with me across the country.

As for employment, Im probably going to end up going without a job. I would like to get a job before I got there so I wouldnt start from scratch but companys like you to live there before they consider you; its a catch 22.

My question is, how much do you think I should go there with? My goal is to save $8000 before I go. I figure that would last me just about 6 months. If in 6 months I cant find a job doing anything then Im in big trouble. My CC would be paid off before I left; I have very little left to pay.

Im looking for outside opinions. My parents obviously want me to stay and my friends wsay I should do it but Im old enough, the time has come.

Thanks for all the hel guys!
Word! I am about to do the same. NY is way too expensive. Even though houses have come into the right price range recently, property taxes do not. 10k taxes on a 390k house....keep it! Young people are moving out of the NY metro area in droves

NC, TX, and CO are on my list. Been to TX...I like it. Been to CO....I love it. NC...never been but I will be in a few weeks.

I thought about LV too, but I was there once in the summer....too hot!

That time was about 9 year ago

Good luck with the relocation. Have you considered a job or career path before deciding to move to Vegas? it may not be the best place.

hold on, you think you can live for 6 months on $8000? didn't you just say you had $1000 in monthly expenses not including housing and food? that is $6000 right there. you think you can stretch the extra $2000 over 6 months for housing/food/whatever else comes up? thats $333 a month. you better save up some more.

You need more than 8,000 if you want to play safe, if you want to just go out there and see if you can get by then go for it with 8,000. I've found that even having housing paid for at school (got extra student loan money to cover apartment for school year) I'm still going to spend probably at least 4 grand on grocerys, having fun (ie drinking)/doing things (traveling for tournaments with my team etc.) I would try not to go gambling either haha

Also living at home the past 9 years I hope you paid off any student loans completely, not sure how you don't have 8 grand yet when your expenses were only 1,000 a month

You'll be fine. One thing, have some leads on employment before you go. You dont necessarly need to have the job, but you need to know where to start looking.

Why would they need you to live there to consider you? If you state up front that you are willing to relocate for that specific job, that should show them that you are serious. When I hire, I'm usually paying for people to fly out to interview, paying to relocate.

As long as you can keep your spending in check (you can, right? -- that's how people get credit card bills), $8000 sounds like plenty. I would imagine that your parents would bail you out if things got really tough, as long as you are doing the right thing. They're paying your rent right now, why wouldn't they want to help you learn to make it on your own? Just ask them if they could be your backup plan to your backup plan.

In an ideal world a 6 month buffer sounds great, but seriously, it's plenty -- if you can't get a job in 6 months, change careers. You should be able to get a job in much less than that if you are serious about it. You're looking for a CAD job in a big market where people build all the time, not an ice fishing in Phoenix.
