An IP address isn't necessarily going to get you much. They can be assigned dynamically, masqueraded, forwarded, and otherwise manipulated so that they're rather difficult to trace.

Most likely scenario is that the IP address is assigned by their service provider either via DHCP or when they log into the service (ala AOL). Tracing it won't get you anywhere other than back to the service provider.

What's the IP?

Do you chase people down if they cut you off so you can beat them up too?

friend, as a network engineer and someone who knows a bit about hackers, having a particular IP address in no way assures that you have any firm information about the person who did some malice to you. why? because any hacker worth his salt would first access a "zombie" machine (usually some home user who is too ignorant to firewall his internet connection) and then do all his attacks by proxy from that machine. the reason being is because often people file complaints with the particular ISP that owns the netblock containing that IP, and that ISP does the research. and there are *millions* of said zombie machines sitting wide-open on the internet... it is from these devices that coordinated attacks against major websites are launched.

you have little or no hope of catching the person. your best bet is to contact the ISP that owns said IP. go to www.arin.net and type the IP in the upper right box. that should give you some information to start from, but to be perfectly honest, the chances of catching said person are next to zero. if it was a felony, the FBI can get involved, and your chances do improve somewhat.

really, just firewall your devices and move on.
