I strongly feel that government has no right to mandate what I eat or drink. They acquiesce and pander to those that give the correct amounts to PAC groups. Anyone else is fair game.
If they outlaw transfats I think the entire city should go Vegan. No worry other than don't eat the Spiniach

Maybe you shouldn't think of trans fat as a food any more than Windex. It is only used to increase shelf life and there are plenty of alternatives. Should restaurants be free to add Windex to the food if it can save them time or effort?

I thought about this too, and you may may a very good point. I suppose I don't know how truly bad trans fats are, and maybe they are on the level with arsenic or windex or something.

It hardens at room/body temperature. How much worse for your arteries can something be?

So making something legal is in no way madating what you can eat or drink but making it illegal is?

There are health concerns that go beyond the abilities of the local level.

Would you have the government lift the ban on Agent Orange? Is that telling you what you can eat? I mean if it gets misted on your food accidentally would it be bad?

How bout red dye #? that causes cancer and yet was in all your food? They made it illegal.

Or is it that you are just a fatty and this one hits close to home?

And high-fructose corn syrup. Avoid it! Trans fat leads to Heart Disease which is the #1 cause of death in America.
Amen! But since we harvest so much more corn than sugar in this country, I don't think that will ever stop. It will hurt a lot of corn farmers in the midwest. I'm surprised we haven't used sucralose that much in foods since it's a lot closer in taste and texture to sugar than aspartame. Most do not know what HFCS does to your metabolism when it's in your system. Pretty scary! I bet it's a significant factor to the rise in obesity in this country.

Basically NY is considering banning trans fat use by restaurants. I personally find it a little ridiculous. Anyone who goes into a dunkin donuts should be properly informed what is in the donut, but I don't think the restaurants should be banned from using a perfectly legal ingredient to protect people from themselves. I rarely eat donuts, although they are probably my favorite thing in the world, but when I'm ready to have one, I shouldn't have this kind of impedement. It reminds me of the movie Demolition Man, where all kinds of things, including kissing and eating bad foods is illegal. It's just going too far.

This isn't even the same f-ing ballpark as the smoking ban, either. If I sit and eat a trans fat filled donut, it's not like some of the trans fats escape my mouth and crawl into the person sitting next to me.

Then again, maybe I just don't fully understand how bad trans fats are, and if they really can be easily substituted..

What do you lot think?
When the dog won't stay in your yard, you put up a fence.

i really dont think people consider the dangers of eating dunkin donuts 3 times a day every day. i really dont... same with burger king. thats not dinner for your kids. thats a treat to get some chicken fingers once a week. i used to BEG to go to mcdonalds, my parents would never take me.

i think the gov is just trying to be helpful, not take our freedoms away. god knows they've got other ways of doing that, i dont think trans fats are something we're going to miss.
