Now hold on just a minute! This can't happen in NY before it happens in CA. That's just not right...

So making something legal is in no way madating what you can eat or drink but making it illegal is?

There are health concerns that go beyond the abilities of the local level.

Would you have the government lift the ban on Agent Orange? Is that telling you what you can eat? I mean if it gets misted on your food accidentally would it be bad?

How bout red dye #? that causes cancer and yet was in all your food? They made it illegal.

Or is it that you are just a fatty and this one hits close to home?
I have no issue with any item that is obviously bad but I do have an issue when we pick and choose what we will ban. Smoking is far worse than transfats but has it been banned? More people die from alachol and related incidents than transfats but has that been banned. Have we banned nitrates / nitites in meats? Have we banned the practice of pumping CO2 into meat packages so the meat stays red for weeks even though it is rotten?

The change to ban transfats in resturants will have about as much effect on the general heath of the population as a f**t in a windstorm!

If we are going to be healthy than lets do what is right rather than what is expedient.

Why do you say that? Heart Disease is the number one killer of Americans.

Because heart disease is a generic catagory. What percentage is caused by transfats versus high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, etc. If you further define by age group, e.g, cancer is the #1 cause in the 50 - 63 age group.

For high blood pressure I thought you were Rx's things like beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, etc. and stay away from salt not Lipitor or Zocor. Stroke is caused by blood clots or Cerebral hemorrhage. Obesity is just consuming more calories than you burn.

Look, people know which foods are good, and which are bad.
You wanna smoke, smoke....
You wanna eat trans fat, go ahead...

If enough people don't want trans fat then the restaurants will be forced to change due to lack of business.

And although I don't smoke so I would be ok with banning tobacco, but I would not be ok with not having the choice. I would make the argument that tobacco has no good qualities whatsoever so it should be illegal. On the other hand, should I argue that being a couch potato has no good qualities so it should be illegal?

It's just like violence or sex on tv, if you don't want to see those things.... don't watch the damn show.

Americans in general know they have no will power to keep themselves away from crappy food (myself included). So now they are trying to invent a system that will help them eat better without them having to make any effort. The places Americans go now will simply not be allowed to use trans fat so Americans can make as little effort as possible to eat better.

Please don't misunderstand my point. I eat crap now and again, but I eat decent for the most part. I get regular exercise. If restaurants stopped serving trans fat and I had to deal with it, ok. But I'm not about to force anyone to do anything.

If it was my call I would be more worried about Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

If you don't konw the answer to that question, then you don't have enough information to say that alcohol is deadlier than transfat.

agree. However, the consumer should be made aware that the restaurant serves trans fat. Only then the can consumer truly have choices.
