Ok, I'm 23 and will travel with my girlfriend and other friend couple (same age). We're thinking to take a plain from UK to New York, spend a day in there, rent a car and drive to Florida, would like to drive from Florida to California so we could see other states on the way (New Mexico...) or would it be better to fly from Florida to Los Angeles? I mean is it worth it to drive (Florida - LA)? And what could we visit there. We will go to Vegas of course, but also would like to see some landscapes (mountains, waterfalls etc.) not just cities.
As we have limited time in USA (just 2-3weeks) we're thinking to take few flights inside USA, not sure about the costs, do you know cheap airlines?
Miami to Los Angeles is 2733 miles. 4398 km. 3.5 days of driving 12 hours each day. You could drive from London to Glasgow and back nearly three and a half times for the same time/distance. Driving from London to Athens would be less distance. In other words the US is big. Find a corner of the national and explore that. There's too much to see here for just two/three weeks.

Something you won't see very close to the UK is something like the desert southwest. The National Park system here rocks. http://www.nps.gov/index.htm Grand Canyon, Zion, Petrified Forest, Death Valley... From there it's not to far from Yosemite and San Francisco to the west, or the Rockies, Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver and Pikes Peak to the east.

California might as well consider itself part of Europe.

Been there, done that. Stay away from California. The whole state is just un-American.

Yeah, I'm getting sick and tired of my favorite hobby: going to San Francisco and misdirecting all those European tourists.

"Yeah, Yosemite. . . you'll want to drive north across the Golden Gate Bridge, stay on U.S. 101, and keep going for about 3 hours. Stop at a bar and then ask if anyone knows Tina. She'll help you from there."

"Yeah, Joshua Tree? Yeah, you'll want to drive south down Highway 1. When you get to San Simeon, ask for directions to Oxnard."

"Yeah, Wine Country. There's no actual wine being made up there. It's a tourist trap. You really want to drive to Fresno. That's where the real action is."

This is a tough request. it is like us saying we will visit Europe for 2 weeks, what to do? When you could easily spend 1 week in just england, or italy, or germany....

I say pick a coast. I prefer the East.

Start in Boston, see a redsox game at fenway.

fly to NYC.. because it is NYC, the most famous place on earth. AND you do NOT want a car here. Dont forget the Statue of Liberty. Skip Yankee stadium, it is new, no real value anymore.

80s movie fan? go to Philadelphia, get a cheese steak and jog up the steps Rocky did.

Washington DC - The most influential govt in the world. White house, smithsonian, etc.

Fly down to Miami. Only spend 2 days there, you can see beaches in Europe, you just want to see the culture. Plus it is expensive.

Drive up to the Kennedy Space Station. See the space shuttles.

Fly to New Orleans. Enjoy bourbon street.

Bonus Stuff:

Like Country Music? go to Nashville

Into horses? maybe hit the kentucky derby (depending on dates)

Into roller coasters? Try Cedar Point in Ohio

Charlotte is home of Nascar

Driving the blue ridge is nice, but i think for a 2 week trip you want to do things you can only do in America. everyplace has trees AND you have the autobahn to boot.

Save the central/west coast for trip 2.

I also recommend NOT driving in the Northeast. you can waste hours in traffic. might as well fly, they have quick shuttles for cheap every day.

You're better off getting a proper guide book.

Grand Canyon and Vegas are a must see.

I live in FL, trust me, you only need to see South Beach and Key West.

Skip the rest of keys and go straight to Key West, it my fav spot in FL.
