Uh oh.... big problem at my job today... (RANT)
I started at this very small re-seller/sales organization (25-30 people) about a month and a half ago. I was hired in a rush by the owner, told that employees get medical/dental, and I didn't get any employment paperwork to complete til middle of the week after I started. I am the only technical guy here, and I'm here to automate their manual labor and develop software so that they can go paperless and track everything they need to. From the beginning, I worked with the director of marketing on all things related to my job. Both the owner and director of marketing have thus far been impressed with my work and the potential that my work brings to their company.
However, I just went back to work today after taking calling in sick for 3 days (I caught some flu from work, it took all coworkers by storm). Today I inquired as to how many sick days I get, etc. The director of marketing told me that I don't get paid for sick days until 60 days of employement have elapsed. This came as a big surprise since my other jobs I've worked at never had a policy like this. I guess I can see why a company would do this if they're new and scrounging for money etc, but the fact that I wasn't even made aware of it upset me, because that translates to over $600 lost sick pay.
So a few minutes later I wrote the following email to the director of marketing (the person that I was under the impression was the person that I am to report to):

Steve, sorry to hear about this. The problem with working for other people is that you'll get this kind of stuff - no escape from it. Why do you think I started IDi? This is one of those reasons.
At any rate, suck it up, the economy is in the shitters so having a job is important.

It's perfectly normal for awards for Australian workers to state that you have to accumulate sick days before you can take them with pay.
A worker receives an entitlement of a certain number of sick days per year accumulative over a certain period.

damn foo...
i work for a Fortune 10 company and we have the same policy. you should have read your employee manual. or did you not get a copy?
take this with a grain of salt. people get over this. as fast as the Owner spat off his sermon, how quickly he will forget this ever happened. that's the salesperson mentality. (ask me, i'm one too) hehe
if this really turns your work into a depressing atmosphere, pick up your bags and leave. oooooooooooorrrrr, file a harassment suit with the Department of Labor.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses guys. I'll do what I can to keep chugging along, but I'll tell you -- it just isn't the same working there anymore. I was actually very excited to get up and go to this job every morning until this happened. Now all I feel like is: the bosses are sleazy salesmen, and I'm a customer that they can manipulate into giving them more money.
P.S. another horrible thing (to me anyway) came to my attention today after all this other stuff. Today I was given medical insurance enrollment forms. I filled it out, and my supervisor (or whoever he is) said don't put down my starting date, with the obscure reasoning that he needed to figure out exactly the right date so that my coverage would start as soon as possible etc (as if there's big long cycles or something). I'm like ok whatever. Later I am walking to the restroom and on my way out this lady mumbles "medical insurance?" I'm like huh what? She says "medical insurance." I'm like ................... "I just signed up for it, oh is that it in your hand?" Then she tells me my coverage will start June 1st. While I'm in the restroom I realize that June 1st is basically 3 and a half months after I started.... not 60 days after (which I was already kinda miffed about). I asked this lady why June 1st instead of 60 days after. She looked at me as if I was dumb (grr) and said "cause then we would have to pay for the 1st three months" or some such BS -- and also that I just filled this form out today, that's why. Well no one told me shit. I was gonna argue and send another sharp email to the owner (who's this lady's sister btw), but I figured I wanted to keep my car a little longer so.... It just makes me mad that my supervisor who I'm supposedly on first-name basis with is manipulating medical insurance to start later than it could.
Don't sweat the small things, Steve. :deepbreath:
