[B]Sorry Steve but I have to go with chipperman on this one...I've been in the working world a long time and managed alot of people. Reading these emails you come across as a whiner. Furthermore, you should have gotten all the benefits/waiting periods straight before you ever accepted the job. That's part of what you find out in an interview.

Soul - I didn't say he was a whiner...I don't know him. I said those emails came across that way. Two different things. He's an employee that has only been working there for a month and a half. It is important that he make a good impression on his employer, regardless of whether you think this is fair or not. Let's face it, the job market isn't great right now, so it's even more important. He should have expressed himself more positively, especially in that first one - bosses don't want to hear what the problem is without some constructive ways to solve it. Anyway, that is water under the bridge. Steve says he's happy again, so that is the main thing. I was just trying to give him some good advice.
Way to go, MsPerky! Steve, you have learned an object lesson that will serve you well. As to Amway, it was a reference to some of their distributors way of describing their jobs. After you are around a while, you'll see the humor in it. Enron got you mad? How about Level 3, Healthsouth, and our good old Qwest? Some people have no shame. Remember, Illegitimus Non Carborundum! (Don't let the bastards grind you down!) As for Morgans comment on sick guys at work: My dad worked 42 years for the same employer and took 3, yes three, sick days off.. Don't talk to me about work ethic until you have one.
Chipperman - There's a line between having a good work ethic and being courteous to your co-workers. Being self-employed, I doubt you've spent any time in a cube farm, but I'm sure you can imagine spending 8-10 hours surrounded by hundreds of other people. Now, if one of them is sick - sneezing, coughing, etc - they are just infecting everyone else. That person is also probably far from being productive, and depending on a person's position, could actually be a detriment to the company.
A fair company would do something for Steve to make the situation better - coming halfway on the sick pay or something to that effect. A bad job market is not justification for treating an employee like crap.

It is Human Resources responsibility and the company's responsibility to inform or at least provide something in writing to new hires of all important company information...from my experience. From Steve's story, it seems like this company is a mom and pop shop that don't have their act together.
