Gary, the problem with a simple two-word silence is that the official pledge would still have the phrase "under god" in it. That is unconstitutional, which is why ideally I think it should be removed, and people could add it in if they like. However, since we do live in a predominantly Christian country, I know that isn't going to happen, which is why I presented the compromise.
I just saw George Carlin (who I love, by the way) on TV, and I learned an interesting fact: the only 2 other countries to ever have a pledge of allegiance are Italy (under Mussolini), and Germany (under Hitler).
I've personally never liked the pledge, god or no god.

There are strong feelings on both sides. In our country the "under God" side has the wide majority. That's doesn't make them right, but it will be how the chips will fall. By the way, being on my side of the issue, I like that!

Thanks for everyone who posted. It has been a great read. I think we've about fizzled out. Hey, we may disagree on some things, but we do own the best two seater in the world don't we?
