PR isn't dangerous if you stay in the right neighborhood. I walked around at 4 AM by myself all the time and never felt any sort of lurking danger. Of course, I stayed in Condado or Isla Verde at that time. I did get lost driving in the barrios a few times, but just locked the doors and didn't slow down for anyone (including a police officer standing in the middle of the street waving me down). Just keep yourself alert and aware of your surroundings and you should be ok.

Oh, and don't go trying to break up any fights or cases of spousal abuse you might see. That is the one thing I heard repeatedly. It sounds really socially irresponsible, but there is to a large degree the idea of "machismo" going on in PR. I did hear stories of people being stabbed for trying to break up a fight between a guy and his girl.

Finally, I found that the people in Puerto Rico were some of the friendliest and warmest people I'd ever met. I was often times invited for "beers at the Esso" with co-workers, and made good friends with a lot of the people I'd met in restaurants and hotels.

yea, i heard about that too from my uncle who visited cuba once. he met some girls at a restaurant and ended up staying w/ them for a few days
