AT&T is 3 years behind Verizon on rolling out 3G, which is why its (faster) network is smaller, but considering there are no people in N Dakota, I don't know why I'd need 3G coverage there. If you overlay Edge coverage with 3G you see a much more complete map. Sure 3G is faster, but its not like there's no data network. Sprint is rolling out 4G now and puts them both to shame.

People bag on AT&T for coverage and Verizon for overpriced services and fees, I don't see how either is better - you either save money and get some poor call quality at times, or pay more and get reamed on stupid fees. T-Mobile has a new $50/mo unlimited calling/data plan which is where I plan to go after my current contract is up.

As far as maps go, here's a good representation of exactly what you're looking at: AT&T's faster new network versus Verizon's older, slower network:

Just b/c the population isn't as dense in those areas, it doesnt mean NOBODY lives there. So I think its still nice that Verizon does reach out to those areas. Coming from an area that was limited to 1 internet service provider, choices are great. The 2 companies have different views of deployment obviously.

I'm with TMobile, which sucks b/c Im 25 miles from atlanta and do not get signal at my house. If I were to switch it would definitely be to Verizon.

^ you're the only one. serious.

AT&T is the only reason I don't have an iphone.

If it werent for the iPhone, ATT would be dead.

My plan is up in may (ATT) so I'll finally be able to get something better. I have a crappy phone so its going to feel great to get rid of my POS. I honestly don't need a lot of apps, just web surfing. So many time's i've been in manhattan and trying to find either a specific place friends are meeting up or find a new place once were out and plans fall through. Droid looks pretty good.

I went from an iphone to a pre... have the exact same amount of minutes and still have unlimited text, and internet and I pay $30 a month less than I was paying with my Iphone... Verizon plans seem high as well. Look at the new droid, and the pricing on the required data plans and what not... sh!t is ridiculous. As far as service goes, different providers are going to have good spots and bad spots as far as coverage goes... I have had no problems whatsoever with the coverage Sprint provides.... but thats just me... Arguing that a cell phone provider sucks because YOU have bad service is pointless... the only thing that can really be argued is who provides the best coverage in the most areas
To piggyback off what I already said, I just went to Verizon's website and looked at what a Droid phone would cost me per month, with all the services I currently have on my pre:

450 anytime minutes
5000 text *(I have unlimited on mine but verizon doesnt seem to offer this)
Unlimited Data
Insurance

grand total per month BEFORE taxes: $113.00

plus from what I understand, if you want to use tethering it is going to cost you another $20-$30

no thank you verizon, Ill stick with $80 a month after taxes with my Pre

Of course, but you'e missing the point that AT&T Edge is about as fast as Verizon 3G, and its in all the places Verizon's 3G is. The Verizon map shows the smaller area the faster AT&T 3G is for marketing reasons - all Verizon can do is argue things like this as it has yet to get a phone that can compete with the iPhone and thus is still in fierce competition with AT&T.

Verizon's biggest mistake was snubbing Apple - it could have had the iPhone and AT&T would never have become so popular. Once AT&T got the iPhone, it started building out the better data network as well, and Verizon is struggling to keep profitable users of smartphones without any stand out products and slower data networks - we'll have to wait and see if the Droid is any better, or any of the new Android OS phones coming out in 2010, at keeping people with Verizon.

Also, I heard that if you have Verizon, you can't access the data network while you're on a call - is that true?
ATT does have a faster network but their network signal quality is so crap that it runs slower in dense markets. My droid raped my iphone 3gs's internet speed in every way possible from downloading email attachments to loading websites. And this was while BOTH had 3g. Whats the point of having 3g service from att when its still slow as shit? ATT's 3g is TECHNICALLY faster but i have never seen those speeds in real life. However, ive tethered both my iphone and droid in 3g areas and the droid will get me 1-1.5 mbs download speed while the iphone got me barely 500 kbs

yes that is true but that it the bad part about cdma networks. CDMA can't run data and phone calls at the same time. Sprint users cant either.

Also keep in mind guys Verizon is the first to start investing in LTE technology which is going to be big.

whats your point? Tmobile will be even cheaper right? But whats the point of having unlimited minutes; etc when your service quality sucks?

Ive had sprint and tmobile in manhattan (HUGE market) and they were both mediocre/bad sometimes. ATT has been by far the worse.

The point is you pay for the better service. Verizon and ATT know that they have two of the largest networks with both pros and cons and thats why they can charge their users extra.

Also its easy as shit to get a 20-30% off your bill with verizon and att. I have verizon now and get 20% off my whole bill so i pay about what you sprint guys pay.
