with vonage, you basically have to turn on the 911 service. It is like a forwarding thing...you dial 911 and it calls the NON-EMERGENCY police line.

I have a cell for 911 so it's fine with me. I am not paying bellsouth $660 a year for the privelidge of a real phone line.

No residential provider today offers true E911 services (with the possible exception of Verizon), and they won't anytime soon. Even with the recent FCC ruling, no one will be in compliance for some time.

SEVNT4, I wish I could offer you some advice, but my company mainly deals with business solutions, and I don't have much experience with the various residential providers. I do have a Cisco 7960 IP phone at my house, though.

I have heard a lot of negative stuff about Skype, but mainly from people in the industry that don't like their propriatary system. Couldn't tell you anything about their performance.

No prob. So far so good.

Yahoo just bought Dialpad Comm and ruled out the Skype purchase so that'll be interesting. I bet Google won't be too far behind in aquiring their own VoIP service.
