Jeez, I just bought a new watch Sunday (sorry no picture). It looks good, will keep as good time as a Rolex and cost $24.98. It's an Armitron, and when it gets to looking scruffy, I'll throw it away and buy another one. I have more importnant things to spend my money on.
ps. I have a cool Movado for dressy occasions.

Seiko = the Toyota of the watch world.
It depends in which context.

Reliability, Dependability, and Excellent Craftmanship? Yes.

With the new Spring Drive and Credor Lines, it is the equivalent to toyota's Lexus division now.

Sure you can buy a Benz or BMW. But do you want to pay for the maintenance? haha.

I love my Omega Speedmaster, one of my favorites. I prefer it over my Rolexes, Cartier, Tag Heuer. With the watches listed that you looked at, consider the Omega Seamaster.

Hi 3vilmonkey!

Here are a couple of final tips you may find helpful.

As correctly noted in a reply posted by someone earlier, fine quality watches should never be considered an appreciating asset. Instead the benefits are best described as personal enjoyment, enhancement of one's appearance and expression of one

AG, to my mind real money doesn't even wear a watch. Watching time is not high-class behavior. We are surrounded by timepieces. My phone or Palm can ring an alarm (or an assistant can call) if I have a schedule to keep.

Now I also realize, as men, that a watch is one of our few standard fashion accessories (along with a pen, ring, and *gag* an earring or two). But with all the excellent fakes out there that hypothetical chick you were dating was better served by paying attention to the shoes you were wearing. They are a more reliable indicator of your economic status.

Hi Penforhire!

I agree with your position that wearing a watch or electing not to wear one is a personal decision. I represent heirs to many Fortune 100 companies and I assure you that they own many fine qualty timepieces, as well as many other item of jewelry. So, I disagree since old money typically does not wear 22K or Platnum Rolex President with a diamond dial and a diamond bezel. And they for sure do not wear Jacobson watches ever. I don't think there are enough sunglasses made to prevent the rest of us from being blinded by the bling otherwise.

Based on my experiences, most of individuals of the type of wealth that is passed on though generations via foundations, etc. are more likely to wear a very expensive, classic style watch but one that is understated so as to not draw attention. A large majority of sports stars and rock stars have unbelievable collections of watches and that represents new wealth in a way. So I am not real clear on what you mean by "real money?"

Status in modern society has not altered to the degree inferred by your position that a palm pilot replaces a fine watch. Status consists of many things. I agree that a watch is only one means to convey a message. I still believe that a watch is a very important aspect in the business and professional world. Afterall, these expensive watches are being purchased and used by thousands of individuals. Same goes for wearing scuffy shoes with a suit. Not the perfect presentation in my humblel opinion.

I am lmao when you refer to my hypothetical chick. I only wish that was true because I reallly liked her. Sure, there was likely a host of issues for not dating her again. But what she said made sence to me insofar I would make an initial assessment about a man who wore scruffy and worn out shoes in connection with nice taylored suit. That does not mean my assessment is correct but it would be one that could likely evidence the man's priorities, etc.

Hey, I respect everyone's viewpoint! You made some good points.

Good luck to eveyone that decides to wear nice watches and the same for those that want to use a palm pilot, cell phone or whatever. It is all good.

Oh, btw, I was wearing a pair of nikes!

AGBLLET,

One thing I don't quite agree upon is your statement that Tag makes a better watch than let's say Seiko.

While Seiko as a whole is by no means a "Luxury" watch company, it makes an excellent quality watch and its quality will rival many of the Tags out there.

There are ranges however. Your $100 Seiko Automatic will not be the same quality as your $3000 Tag Automatic movement. But take a look at some of their "upper end" models that range in the $3k+ range, and I think you'll see that Seiko has come a long way and their quality is either on par or far surpasses many of their swiss competitors. Their new Spring drive is more accurate than any other swiss mechanical movement watch out there.

Also Tag probably uses the simple ETA movements that are found in every other lower to mid range swiss watch. Probably the same as a Movado or Rado. Thus its not Tag that makes a great watch its ETA that makes a good movement. Also you can thank Tag's marketing dept for the millions they spend every year on paying Tiger and others to tell you that his watch is the Sh!t.

I have many swiss watches and appreciate their craftmanship and quality, but I enjoy Seiko's just as much because they can offer the same quality and craftmanship without the air of being pretentious. I don't think a lot of people give them enough credit for the things they have been able to accomplish.

I've said it before and will say it again. People used to laugh at Honda and Toyota when they started selling cars in the US. Now who's laughing, as Toyota is set to take over GM as worlds largest car mfg. Now I'm not saying I think Seiko is going to become the next Rolex.... but they have a very promising future for their new upper tiered models and the watch community(Time Zone etc...) has been very well receptive to their new direction. I wouldn't be suprised to see many "fine" watch stores to begin carrying these models and having them sell.
