for whatever reason, maybe your appearance or the professional ambiance of the restaurant had her confident that such a move would go with little to no objections from those waiting in line. no dialogue was needed actually...once you determined that she was gonna stay in line after her withdrawal, all you had to do was politely, but definitively, get in front of her. this more than likely would have started a chain reaction that would of put her where she belonged(somewhere behind YOU).
Anyhoo, I can't really lower myself to her level b/c it's a fairly small town and word gets around fast if I behave badly.
When I first moved to Tokyo, I used to tell people similar stories, about how I'd be waiting in line at the train station for 15 minutes to get on the train, only to have a drove of smelly salarymen walk up at the last minute and push me aside right as the train doors opened and they jumped in front of me.
I think that in America, we are just accustomed to common courtesy that simply doesn't exist in other countries. I noticed the same thing in Hong Kong , China and Korea about lines and waiting in line being foreign concepts. Perhaps the lady who cut in front of you is from a land where lines and common courtesy do not exist?

I snatched it away before he got his hands on it, and the chef said that happens all the time. He said most people just stand there looking stunned and say "Did that guy just walk up and steal my food?".
