Used them in MN when they bought NW Bank. Still use them here in TX. Never any issues. Must be your branch
I had an issue where I paid for something and didn't receive it for several months, had wells fargo reverse the charge, and it took multiple calls and about a month before the money was in my account.
Of course everytime i called it cost me $2 and i couldn't talk to the branch representatives, "You have to go through customer service."
Whack...
Probably just local. WF is actually up there on satisfaction, whatever that is worth.
They aren't competitive in most areas where I put real money, but I do have a checking account with them because they have a $hit load of branches in TX and I need somewhere to get cash/deposit cashier's checks, make cashier's checks, etc. They don't make much money off me.

i had a lot of trouble with them and finally changed banks.
usually i had teller error issues. once the teller dropped my paycheck into the wrong account (oops). when i figured out what happened, i was told, "well, it's a good thing you didnt overdraft, because then you'd have to pay all the fees!" IT'S YOUR MISTAKE, DOUCHE!
once they gave me about $50 by accident at a drive-thru. i was honest and gave it right back.
there was at least 2 more similar 'just plain teller stupidity' type events--i was always honest, nice, and ALWAYS careful to keep and check all of my receipts from them.
i can understand give and take, so i was ok with this. they screw up, i see it, i call them up, and after a while i get to somebody that can fix it and they do after i prove their error. so one day i make a mistake.
i had a large repeating bill hit me via autopay a week earlier than i expected--2 days before payday. i never knew it, but i went into overdraft. i screwed up, i admit it. but my average daily balance was about $2000 at the time, and was married that month, just made the acct joint, and i bought our honeymoon cruise tickets between paychecks. basically, this was the first and only time i didnt have at least a $1000 cushion in the account. they hit me for 13 separate overdraft fees of $34 each over about 5 days, and they never contacted me, even after the card was cut off. all the purchases were under $50; most were things like $7 for lunch, and so i didn't ever realize my balance was low until i checked the balance routinely nearly a week later.
they had cut off my debit card when the balance hit -$500, but over 2/3rds of the negative balance was fees, and i just figured my card had stopped working because the magnetic strip was split--i had developed a fairly long 1/2" crack in the card--and keep in mind this happened over only a few days.
when i figured out what had really gone on, i went in to ask for mercy, they told me i'd have to go to the place where i started the account. well, that was a different city. ("I'm sorry, but there's nothing else I can do.") And of course they couldn't do it by phone for some reason or another. So to even get started, i had to drive over an hour each way to the city where i started the account, and i had to work around the local store manager's schedule to make it happen.
after lengthy discussion, the guy gave me a 30 minute "you need to be responsible with you bank account" lecture and told me "All I can do is refund half the fees. If I refund them all, people usually never learn a lesson." gee, thanks teacher, you only took about ~$200 from me for my mistake, not ~$400. now i feel like you dwarf Socrates for wisdom.
now i use the credit card instead of debit, and at a different bank, my balance sits around $5000. i'm EXTREMELY glad Wells Fargo doesnt make one cent of the interest.
