What can you tell me about Seattle?

1. How's the traffic situation?
2. What's this area like? Would you want to live close to here?
3. What would be a good area for a single, young, well-paid professional and what's the real estate market like in such an area?
I just moved back to Texas from Seattle because I couldn't stand it anymore...not the rain but the clouds and politics...get this, if you live in King County and own more than 5 acres of land, you can only use 20%, the socialists up their think it is their right to your land!
As far as traffic, I lived in lower queen anne (three blocks from the space needle), my commute was 12.5 miles to the east side (MSFT)...going wasn't bad, but then again I left at 6/6:30 am, when I left at 7:15am it was almost as bad as at 5/6pm...oh, yeah, 5/6pm it could take me 2 HOURS to go 12.5 miles...and there didn't have to be an accident to cause that!!! Typical was 1 to 1 1/2 hours!! Just awful...
As far as real estate, we just has friends buy a 2/1 fixer upper 45 minutes north of the city for 325,000, condo's (studio) starts around 200k downtown area....our 2/1 apt 1100 sqft, rent wasn't bad at 1200, but to buy something like that would have been 500k...property taxes aren
Thanks for the heads-up. I can understand some of the negatives you mentioned, like the politics and such, but I do believe you'll encounter those problems everywhere you live.
I would probably like Texas a lot more if I lived in a different part of the state. Unfortunately, I am stationed in South Texas and the whole border scene has become very old. As far as politics here go, don't get me started. The good-ole-boy system is firmly in place here and the things that go on would make your head spin. They say South Texas has the most corrupt counties in the United States, and I believe it. The property taxes here are outrageous and the schools pitiful - not to mention the cities are generally very dirty with all kinds of questionable characters running loose.
I have ventured into other areas and do enjoy the hill country. I think living between San Antonio and Austin would be quite agreeable. But I will never get to one of these areas with my work.
So maybe, given a choice between being stuck in Western Washington or South Texas, Washington would be the better option. All I know is I'm long overdue for a change of scenery and am curious as to what I should be expecting in Seattle.
