What is it with "rape" ?!?
Well, not sure what to say at this point in this thread, other than the fact that we have conundrum at this point.
So we endure the skepticism of many factions of current political awareness that are crying for attention
I can only reveal that I stand on the hard left
And that I long for the good old days of the 'net when if you did not know UNIX you did not be a part of an original group of free thought people
That said, go ahead and reply with your philosophical and intellectual garbage that has grown beyond tired
Maturity and wisdom can be measured by careful analysis, as I always do when I read the various posts (and the supposed hidden source) of this board's members

StrangeDaze- That's not really related, since the issue there is ignorant assumptions. The word "niggardly" does not stem from the word "nigger," which is the uncorrected assumption in that case.
My male friends all thought the use of the word rape to describe the results of a race was probably inappropriate in polite company. The question is if S2KI.com is polite company. If you want more female members, perhaps their wishes should be accomodated.
As to DougM, what a whiny little frog. Why don't you go back to the third world inbred backwater you are so fond of. The modern world has no use for your tired invective and parochial mindset.

There were people here who assumed that rape only had one real definition, that being forcible sexual intercourse. When it was pointed out that there were multiple correct definitions for the word rape, this conversation switched to one that seemed to indicate that the listener's feelings about your words were more important than your words, the intent of your words, and the message you were trying to deliver.
Which is where the other case comes in. In both cases, offense is taken because the word, despite being used correctly, makes the listener think or feel something other than what the speaker intended. The difference between the two is where the majority of people seem to draw "the line" of offensiveness or inappropriateness.
So, shouldn't that teacher have erred on the side of being overly sensitive? If not, why?

This board has always had the "no politics" rule in place.

DougM... you know the rules of this board... why push them?
StrangeDaze- OK, put that way, there is a connection.
That teacher in NC was doing her job. She taught students the meaning of the word "niggardly." The article in the link stated the teacher was using the word as part of a literary discussion. Since the word appears in books from the past, it would only make sense to teach students its meaning, and perhaps mention that it has nothing to do with African-Americans. If the teacher was to err on the side of "overly sensitive," she would not have asked the students to read a book that contains the word. But that is kind of silly, considering the issue is with a word that is not offensive, just made some woman think of another offensive word. That logic would be like if I said I raced a car and beat it, and some got offended, because people of my race used to beat people of their race. Not exactly rational.

Words are tools, nothing more, if you read something into them from personal experience then you are attaching life to something that is dead...a definition.
When one says "rape" they feel a certain way about saying it.
When one hears "rape" they feel a certain way about hearing it.
There is no "right", there is no "wrong", there is only personal context.

Then you're a liar, and that's wrong.
