When/Will the WTC be rebuilt?
If you are to build another building, it can't look like the old one. It will bring back bad memories. Also, if they build it the same, it will kind of make it seem like nothing happened and we forgot about all the people that died.
I think they should, and will, rebuild....bigger, stronger, and more majestic (we have the technology...). They'll bring the World's Tallest Building title back to the States, and at the same time give the big FU to all the terrorists of the world. What better memorial than to spit in the face of death and go on, strengthened by the experience?
FYI: Senators Clinton, Shumer, Gov. Pataki, and Mayor Gulliani all on record as saying they would rebuild, but not saying where. I say we build it even bigger than before.
I took my first trip to NYC on Dec 23-25 of last year. The WTC was the last place we checked out. That complex was HUGE. Wish I went to the top though.
PS: I didn't think the NYC attitude was a bad as people would let you believe. It might just have been the Christmas season and the fact we stayed uptown. We had a lot of fun there. When things are better, you bet I'll be back.

As someone who was across the street at the time of the attack & as someone that has worked in lower Manhattan for my entire professional career (6 years), I have mixed feelings on whether the towers should be rebuild. . .
Personally, because they represent MUCH more than just American capitalism, I think they should be restored (It makes me sick not being able to see them & even sicker when I think that I was there watching them fall). . .
However, I also think a memorial (similar to the Arizona @ Pearl harbor or the Federal building in Oklahoma) is ABSOLUTELY necessary. . .
IMO, I think the Towers, the complex and the surrounding buildings should be rebuilt. However, instead of a concrete plaza between the buildings, I think a park/memorial should be constructed in memory of those that suffered, and those that died on September 11, 2001. . .

Rebuild them as a memorial. However, slightly change them so that are angled in such a way that when viewed from the vantage point of the purpotrators of this atrocity they look like the silhouette of a giant hand flipping them off. I think that would do nicely AND reflect the resolve and attitude of NY & the US
and by the way my s2k is on the way!
I assume the idea of "giving the finger" etc. is meant in jest.
I think that would be in very bad taste and would take away from any memorial that is erected on the site.
As for creating another target, there are hundreds of potential targets in America and around the world already, rebuilding, which I think SHOULD be done, would only add one more, which IMHO would make no difference in the end.

New York's skyline and it's people have gone through a horrific amputation...but they need to rebuild. As for building in the center of the country, well, jets fly there too - so it won't make to much of a difference.
I wonder if this will change all city architecture forever. How can a building be designed to withstand such attacks?
Anti-aircraft guns on the roof?

For everyone thinking "uh...who would build yet another target" have you completely forgotten about the large number of other tall buildings and important American landmarks and structures that are equally targets?
Also, for those thinking "uh...who the hell would want to work in it" do you suppose everyone still working in a skyscraper will be quitting their jobs? That current skyscrapers will be dismantled or reconfigured? That businesses will flee to the suburbs and low-rises?
Also...for those thinking "put the WTC towers in the middle of the nation" for better protection. Well, seems to me there are airports all throughout the US which are, as we've seen, very convenient sources of very large, human-guided missiles and do major incendiary damage as well. The WTC was not struck because it happened to be near coastline. Also, Oklahoma seems fairly central to me. Did that exempt it from a severe structural attack? Tim McVeigh (if, in fact, he is not just some other group's patsy) didn't have the same stroke of genius that we saw on Tuesday, thank God. I think he could have found an airport close enough by...
Finally -- the attack was NOT primarily about killing people. The attack is about hurting America's economy, and killing thousands is just an added bonus to them. The fact that it is the most visible symbol of American wealth is an added bonus as well. The Pentagon attack was about weakening or crippling a military and intelligence centre. The strikes were of stragetic importance and not chosen for sheer body counts.
I agree with Former NY Mayor Ed Koch that the WTC should be rebuilt. It should also be inscribed as a memorial. The fact that it will be rebuilt will be (as some have sensibly said) a DEFIANT STATEMENT that the attack was NOT successful in hurting the American spirit OR economy. A better memorial to those who lost their lives would be to NOT leave a gaping hold in the NY skyline...which, as many have noted, is having a definite effect on the psyche of New Yorkers.
You get knocked down, you get back up.

A lasting memorial should, and most certainly will, be erected to all those who perished in Tuesday's madness; however, Manhattan real estate, being worth thousands of dollars per square foot, will ensure that a commercial structure of some sort will be built there.
