Default White spots on underneath tongue

My mom's had this for over a year now and it only gets worse. There are lots of little white spots under her tongue and some swelling too. It makes eating very painful and now there's no way she can eat anything spicy or too stimulating. Has anyone heard of this symptom before? I searched some online and some say it happens to a lot of women and it's not too serious, but some also say it may be very serious. The dentist referred her to an oral surgeon but the line is too long here. Any help would be appreciated.

Over a year? Does she have some reason for her immune system to be sick such as cancer, genetic problem, medications etc? Sounds like Thrush (yeast) but usually is secondary to immunocomprimise. Has she seen a doctor?

This is common with AIDS patients as well. Not trying to scare you but she needs to get tested because who knows what this may be.

Could it possibly be swollen taste buds? Those things can really hurt if they're in the right spot and you have more than one.

Also, it might be an ulcer (canker sore) on the tongue. I've had that happen once and I was in agony for two weeks, but I've never heard of them lasting for a year.

Yesterday she had a tiny part of her tongue cut off for the doctor to examine if there's any serious problem with it. I hope it's nothing major.

At least you got the biopsy ...now it's just a waiting game.

good luck Vik. My mom has had a whole whackload of serious medical conditions, so I know how much it can suck waiting and being able to do nothing, but just try not to worry and keep her spirits up in the meantime.

Canker most likely, if it is anything else not great prognosis. Oral surgeon maybe, any good derm can do it in 30 seconds.
