I'm all for being rich

My aunt's family are spendthrifts too. She blew through over a million bucks in around 5 years, but at least she still has a couple of houses to show for it. Most of it went to Atlantic City.

My cousin got a $165,000 settlement from a car accident and blew it in nine months. When he was done he'd had an incredible number of lapdances and owned a Subaru SVX that was so trashed he sold it for $200.

I can't do that crap with my money.

To get the scholarship $ and grants don't you have to have decent grades though? Not sure about the 1-2% academically, but you would need to be near the top wouldn't you?

I have twin "half" brothers (same mom, different dad) who are going to college right now and they get all kinds of stuff due to my mom being pretty poor and them being fairly smart (1250ish on their SAT's and mostly A's in highschool).....

My dad taught at a shitty state school so i got free tuition.....I just had to pay books, rent, food, etc..... I worked in a bar and ate and drank for free....
grants and scholarships arent always there, my wife (fiance at the time) lived on her own making about 17K a year trying to put herself through school, she couldnt qualify for any student aid on her fafsa because her parents (both seperated and remarried) made enough that her expected family contribution was way too much even though they neither supported nor helped her in any way. i watched her spend countless hours applying for numerous scholorships to no avail. the financial aid dept at her school told her, that they had to be on her fafsa no matter what, unless she was married or over 21. sure, she could have just left them off and probably had nobody notice, but shes not like that. i saw to it that she stayed in school and will be finishing her masters this year. but i hate to say that if i hadnt been there to help her with it, she would have dropped out because there was no way that she would be able to pay her rent and other bills as well as tuition. btw, she was an a/b student 1300 sat.

now im not judging the system one way or the other, im just saying that there are always going to be exceptions. there are some people that are going to take advantage of it, and other times there are deserving people that are going to slip into the cracks and be forgotten.

Love the title change.

I also see it to the opposite extreme... those working average jobs, being ultra cheap, saving every penny they can and as a result live shitty lives. In the end they may die with a million dollars in the bank but for what?

I think its all about balance. Work hard, play hard. Spend your money but don't blow it all away. Personally I would be more happy in the end knowing that I enjoyed and had a fulfilling life than have millions in the bank that I never got to use.

[QUOTE=Scot,May 26 2006, 10:47 AM] Without getting into great details, how do people who make minimal $ but spend like kings ever expect to get anywhere?

trading money for good times doesnt seem to be a stupid thing to do. what is money good for if not to be converted into happiness?

Some people are just stuck renting. In this day and age when real estate prices are sky high, buying a house through traditional financing (20% down, 80% loan on a fixed 30 year mortage) is hard unless severe sacrifices are made. Severe sacrifices like driving a POS car for the next 5 years, never going out, never take a vacation, only buy clothes from Walmart, a $0.39 chesseburger at McDonalds is considered a luxury, etc. Some people just don't want to make those sacrifices and sometimes renting can be a better choice for certain people.
