Why does everyone want tips in vegas?
I goto Vegas every year... this time I went with the goal to avoid pointless tipping as much as possible. I dont understand why these people feel they need tips for doing such minimal tasks. I can understand tipping in Mexico, they are poor so I toss around 20 bucks a day on tips, but in vegas??? so annoying...
here is an example of a pointless tip.
I walk up to the sign that says "TAXI" at my hotel . The taxis park 30 feet away. A man standing at the taxi sign waves to the taxi. So that taxi drives ahead 30ft... the man at the sign opens the door to the taxi...he then puts out his hand expecting a tip.
Like WTF??? If the taxis lined up at the sign itself, the man would not have to wave to the taxi driver to pull ahead OR I could simply wave to the taxi myself.
I am able to open a door myself. Why would I want such easy tasks done for me...and why would I pay 2 bucks to someone to do these simple tasks for me???
I can understand tipping the cocktail ladies in the casino... they are getting me a cold drink and bringing it to me for FREE...so I tip every single time to them.
anyone else wanna comment?
It's kind of like pointless threads. If you disagree, just feel free to ignore them....
Think about it from the door holding taxi guy's point of view.
He's standing there doing a shit job for snotty nosed cheapo tourists.
If one of them turns out to be a high roller and slips him a $20, then it's something for nothing.
Some people say that it doesn't hurt to ask. The worst they can say is no.... or they can whine on an interweb forum....

Crazydude, I feel the same way. The guy at the taxi stand was way over the line, but it's almost as bad everywhere else. Why are you expected to give the barber (or hairstylist if you want to call it that) a tip? I mean they're doing their job. Bartenders too.
Last year, I was at a bar that took forever to get served. I mean people who came up to the bar after I arrived were getting served before me. When I finally got my drink and paid for it, the bartender had the nerve to demand a tip. I told him he didn't deserve a tip due to his lousy service.
The server at Starbucks, the clerk at Dunkin Donuts, the taxi driver, the guy with the baggage cart at the airport or the hotel, why the F do all these mofos feel that they're entitled to a tip, esp. when they're just doing the job they're hired to do in the first place. If they want a raise, don't expect it from me, I'm not their employer.
Tips are for going above and beyond, not for doing your job. When the F will I get a tio just for doing my job?

I, being in this "service industry" have seen many of these threads and I always give my "two cents" if you will
Nevada, for one is a "tourist state"....There was an article in a book somewhere that I cant seem to find right now that described how as a state it was voted upon to pay these jobs min. wage or less in return for the patron of the bar/valet/etc/etc to make up for the wage not received . Something about a lower tax of some kind for the residents of the state. Now I cant remember exactly "why" or the specifics of this i am just going off the top of my head. Lots of people who are not use to the "ways" of the tipping industry or havent been involved in it just wont ever understand and i was the same way until i started myself, buy if you go to Vegas, you should be prepared to tip for everything. If you tip nowhere else, make sure you tip in Las Vegas.
It is "illegal" to hail your own cab in Las Vegas, thats why they have the people that actually hail them for you as an actual paid job there. They get min. wage and make 80K+ a year on average doing it. Also one of the most sought after jobs there. Not only does he wave the cab over, but he will load your bags in the car and tell the cab driver where to go. So you dont even have to speak to the driver if you dont want. This helps to speed up the process of getting everyone in the cabs and moving, if the cab driver had to get out and load the bags it really puts a damper on things. They really just keep the process flowing fast
I myself am a Valet attendant. Lots of places are pay per hour parking, valet is usually free, so do you want to tip a few bucks everytime you park or on average 3 per hour in the self park garages???? Perks are, if anything happens to your car, its insured unlike if you park yourself in a garage and anyone can mess with your car you are SOL.
Bellman, Takes your bags out of your car and stores them in a safe place until you are ready. You dont have to lug your bags around until your room is ready or make your wife struggle trying to bring up her 5 bags for the weekend. A dollar per bag is the common tip for Bell service. Not much considering the ease it brings to your trip.
I however have noticed that tipping reflects where you are from, I have noticed Canadians barely ever tip,.......New York area people tip great, Oregon and Washington not so much. Golfers great. Florida great, Southern state residents rarely tip good.
So I guess its just a culture thing. I dont wanna sound like a dick at all but people should be prepared when they go to tipping industry towns. And if you have a problem with the customary things dont use the service, its that easy.
Its that simple. The hairstylist however is not getting paid but maybe 8 bucks an hour, they rent the space they use which is not cheap which is not cheap, 1000 a month for a damn chair and the money they charge for the cut does not go to them, a percent will but not nearly enough to live on alone.
The tipping is so good in Vegas that I am hoping I get the job I applied for because at the same hotel, a friend made 106k last year delivering bags to peoples room. Not bad. Hell, my friend that was a cabana boy at the Hard Rock would make 300-500 a day while in high school, HIGH SCHOOL boy making that much is crazy, all he did was set up cabanas and deliver towels.

edit: my GF just informed me that if they rent a chair to cut the hair, they dont get an hourly wage at all. The rental does not include any of the products used, scissors, clippers, etc. They have to buy it all and hopefully at least break even at the end of the day. So if the girl cuts 15 heads in her day, and nobody tips, she went through a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of conditioner, 2 cans of hair spray and however many color tubes which in turn cost a total of probably 100 bucks and then nobody tipped so she just spend her own money to work all day.
