Tips should not be mandatory .. I mean we all should agree that it is based on SATISFACTION of a service ....

For those who said that if you don't want to tip, then do not use the service .. the OP mentioned that he pretty much had no choice!

I mean you guys can argue that they get minimum wage and need the tips etc. Are we to tip the server at McDonalds? They are making minimum wage, and they are "getting" the food for us.

With that said, I am always a generous tipper. Normally when I am eating out I tip an avg. of 20%. One of my "tests" (if you want to call it that) is the drink refills. I drink like an elephant, and if the server does not pay attention to the fact that my drink is empty, then the tip will be not so high.

i think its not really a matter of cheapskates, but a rather of EARNING your tip.

It is "illegal" to hail your own cab in Las Vegas, thats why they have the people that actually hail them for you as an actual paid job there. They get min. wage and make 80K+ a year on average doing it. Also one of the most sought after jobs there. Not only does he wave the cab over, but he will load your bags in the car and tell the cab driver where to go. So you dont even have to speak to the driver if you dont want. This helps to speed up the process of getting everyone in the cabs and moving, if the cab driver had to get out and load the bags it really puts a damper on things. They really just keep the process flowing fast

Yah, that's the problem I have with it. A bag loader makes more than people who went to college and paid their professional dues. I'm perfectly capable of raising my hand for a brief second bending down to pick up my bag and lifting it into the trunk. The cab door is also not much of an obstacle. And if I can explain to the useless cab hailer where I'm going so he can tell the cabbie couldn't I just tell the cabbie in the first place? I'm all for tipping if the service is good, but that's beyond ridiculous. All the cab hailer did was get in the way. What'll Vegas do next? Make it illegal to was your windshield at a gas station and send the bums at you to make your windshield even dirtier palms out stretched?

but can you image the chaos that would happen if everyone was trying to get their own cab??? it would be like everyone going to out to eat and trying to cook their own meal in the kitchen.

And everyone is quick to say McDonalds gets min. wage,....the last time i checked they were starting at 10 per hour around here.

Also "t.i.p." means "to insure promptness" or "tips"="to insure prompt service"........basically before the service. which rarely happens,....in fact this morning we had about 15 cars up to be retrieved and 4 runners on. The guy comes to the window and hands a 20 and asks to come up right then,.....it happened. The lady behind him threatened to complain if we didnt skip for her too....and she didnt tip anything before hand . some people just dont get it.
