Why does everyone want tips in vegas?
This is an old thread I participated in relevant to exactly this topic.

[quote name='sillyboybmxer' date='Dec 27 2008, 12:31 AM'] I, being in this "service industry" have seen many of these threads and I always give my "two cents" if you will
Nevada, for one is a "tourist state"....There was an article in a book somewhere that I cant seem to find right now that described how as a state it was voted upon to pay these jobs min. wage or less in return for the patron of the bar/valet/etc/etc to make up for the wage not received . Something about a lower tax of some kind for the residents of the state. Now I cant remember exactly "why" or the specifics of this i am just going off the top of my head. Lots of people who are not use to the "ways" of the tipping industry or havent been involved in it just wont ever understand and i was the same way until i started myself, buy if you go to Vegas, you should be prepared to tip for everything. If you tip nowhere else, make sure you tip in Las Vegas.
It is "illegal" to hail your own cab in Las Vegas, thats why they have the people that actually hail them for you as an actual paid job there. They get min. wage and make 80K+ a year on average doing it. Also one of the most sought after jobs there. Not only does he wave the cab over, but he will load your bags in the car and tell the cab driver where to go. So you dont even have to speak to the driver if you dont want. This helps to speed up the process of getting everyone in the cabs and moving, if the cab driver had to get out and load the bags it really puts a damper on things. They really just keep the process flowing fast
I myself am a Valet attendant. Lots of places are pay per hour parking, valet is usually free, so do you want to tip a few bucks everytime you park or on average 3 per hour in the self park garages???? Perks are, if anything happens to your car, its insured unlike if you park yourself in a garage and anyone can mess with your car you are SOL.
Bellman, Takes your bags out of your car and stores them in a safe place until you are ready. You dont have to lug your bags around until your room is ready or make your wife struggle trying to bring up her 5 bags for the weekend. A dollar per bag is the common tip for Bell service. Not much considering the ease it brings to your trip.
I however have noticed that tipping reflects where you are from, I have noticed Canadians barely ever tip,.......New York area people tip great,

In other countries, I use the taxi guys not just to call the cab, but to tell me how to get places, and to tell the cabbie to go a certain way and not try and screw me with a long drive to my destination. For that service they get tips, if they just call a cab up, no tip.

edit: my GF just informed me that if they rent a chair to cut the hair, they dont get an hourly wage at all. The rental does not include any of the products used, scissors, clippers, etc. They have to buy it all and hopefully at least break even at the end of the day. So if the girl cuts 15 heads in her day, and nobody tips, she went through a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of conditioner, 2 cans of hair spray and however many color tubes which in turn cost a total of probably 100 bucks and then nobody tipped so she just spend her own money to work all day.
OT, but I think it comes down to where you work. If you're going to do the work like cut hair, wait tables, etc, do it where the money is, don't work at Great Clips or Waffle House, work at a salon or a high end steak house. Make it count.

Crazydude, I feel the same way. The guy at the taxi stand was way over the line, but it's almost as bad everywhere else. Why are you expected to give the barber (or hairstylist if you want to call it that) a tip? I mean they're doing their job. Bartenders too.
Last year, I was at a bar that took forever to get served. I mean people who came up to the bar after I arrived were getting served before me. When I finally got my drink and paid for it, the bartender had the nerve to demand a tip. I told him he didn't deserve a tip due to his lousy service.
The server at Starbucks, the clerk at Dunkin Donuts, the taxi driver, the guy with the baggage cart at the airport or the hotel, why the F do all these mofos feel that they're entitled to a tip, esp. when they're just doing the job they're hired to do in the first place. If they want a raise, don't expect it from me, I'm not their employer.
Tips are for going above and beyond, not for doing your job. When the F will I get a tio just for doing my job?

I used to work at a real coffee house back in the day, and we'd educate customers on beans, roasts, drinks, etc, and do special drinks. Of course we got tipped and deserved it. You don't get that at Starsucks, and they don't get tips.
Sillyboybmxer has got the first half of the story.
Basically it's this:
Minimum wage for the employer to fulfill the basic (state-mandated) end of the job.
Tips for the actual hustle involved with the job.
Since it's all cash-based, both sides (both labor and management) agree.
It's not something for nothing; it's something for something that YOU, the customer dictate terms. You're just not used to it being that laissez-faire.
Edit: I find it slightly amusing a Canadian originated the thread (even though he's a Westerner)

I had a conversation about salary with a barber at a Haircuttery once, (admittedly it was quite a few years ago when I had this conversation) and he said that they split the barbers split the amount paid by the customer 50/50. So when the haircut was $8, the barber got $4 and the store got $4.
Now the cost is $15, so that would mean the barber gets $7.50. Multiply that by an average of 3 per hour and they're getting $22.50/hr. Multiply that by 40hrs/week and by 52 weeks a year and you have $46,800, which I think is at or slightly above the national average yearly salary. Still no reason tio tip unless it's for 'above and beyond' service.
$80-105k as a bellboy? That's just insane. Hell, that's approaching big city mayor and Governor salary!

you have to deal with the drunks and the assholes that would get pissed at you because it took so long to get served even though there were 20 people waiting
meanwhile there's some drunk girl that can't carry a tune in a bucket singing karoke
