why are indians/pakistanis considered asians?
"Race" in America is whacked. The answer is because the government says so. Seriously, that's it. The government (more specifically, the Office of Management and Budget) says: The "Asian" category will be defined as "A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam."

"Race," beyond official government use that may or may not reflect society, biology, culture, history or reality in general, is otherwise a figment of our imagination and prejudices.
(Did you know that according to the OMB, an Asian person can be Hispanic? Go figure.)
