most of the time the ones at schools are screwed up due to poor networking or etc... we had problems at my university with our mac lab but yet my work computer and my home computer work far superior to my old PC's
the macs at my school are ok, but the network sucks. im in community college though for now untill i transfer out to a good school. ill probably be majoring in computer graphics and film/animation.
I went Austin Peay State University in TN and I currently work for a small record label in Nashville as a designer.
What type of graphics and animation are you looking to get into... like 3D type things such as Pixar or ILM or more on the lines of film like cinematography?

neat.
ill run out and get a dual g5 2ghz with a 21 inch monitor for 10 grand. that should do it right and it won't be the mac's fault should it crash because of the networking..
my school=de anza college in california=the #1 community college in cali and close to top community college in the nation.
and our connection aint slow. i dl at 2mb/s on the school's network at peak hours

because mac owner have such big ego that their computer is better because it does what they called "graphics better". i see that as an overstatement.
they compare mac perform better side by side with the same cpu power # and not the price. another thing. if macs are soo horrible at network. then they should be avoided. network is the future.
back to graphics. you do realize that the gaming industry is the majority force driving the technological innovation for pcs today. had it not been for gaming, the graphics industry wouldn't be as strong. with that in mine. gamers demand better hardware for their gaming experience. thus pushes for new development of every single hardware piece.
harddrive
rams
sounds
etc....
macs are overpriced for the work they do.

Jeez guys, chill.
Mac users will continue to use macs, PC users will stick with PCs. I use linux sometimes, does that mean that I think everything else is inferior? No, they all have their trade-offs. Macs will always be more expensive, that's just the economics of Apple. Personally, I prefer PC architecture because I can screw with it more. I'm much more open to Apple Land now that they've moved to a UNIX based OS. OS9 blew big monkey balls, OSX is WAY better. It is BSD based though, not linux, which is (sometimes) and important difference. I can run perl scripts just the same that I can in Windows that I could in OSX. OK, there are some differences in the Perl distributions, but most of them are well documented. Besides, I use Cygwin, which is a simulated linux environment.
Apple took BSD, tweaked it, and made common libraries and a nice (I think awesome) GUI to go with it. This is the problem with linux, there are too many libraries and too many GUI frameworks etc. Nothing plays along, and it just drags the system to a crawl.
It's not the graphics hardware on Macs that is better, it's the software and the fact that the CPU is RISC based, so stop beating that drum. The color calibration etc is much better supported on Macs because they know who uses them. PCs are still playing catchup with Macs in the respect.
It's apples and oranges, give it up.
