I feel very lucky that we don't have any major sports teams in area where I live. Getting caught in pumped up fan traffic before or after a game isn't my idea of fun.

I happy we don't all like the same things.

To answer your question in the topic, people are so into sports is because of betting.

Believe it or not, all sports are all setups.

Where are the billions of dollars coming from for paying salaries to players?
Y'know the majority of people enjoy their sports without betting at all and teams don't directly benefit from sports bets made. The billions are dolllars comes from the thousands of people that pack a stadium however many games a year, the advertisements the team chooses to run in their stadiums, the concession stands, etc., EVERYTHING.

And the salaries atheletes make are directly proportional to the sports they play. Hockey isn't that popular in the US, so hockey players' salaries are generally smaller than baseball/basketball/football players. If hockey evers reachs the level of popularity that those sports enjoy in the US, you can be damn sure the NHLPA would negotioate a higher salary cap and player cap. Sports teams are billion dollar industries because we make them billion dollar industries, not because they're some huge "setup".

It's a business. Is that so hard to comprehend?
