wild bird question
random question, but does anyone know how long wild birds live? i know there are many species, and it can vary, but i have a bird that sleeps in the corner of my porch awning( no nest or anything) and he has been there for about 3 years, then was missing for about 6 months, and now he is back. its a small brown bird with spots, about the size of my fist in richmond va.
It's hard to say without knowing what kind of bird it is. Is it something like a sparrow or a chickadee? The average life span I've heard for those types of birds in the wild is usually around 2-3 years. They have the ability to live a lot longer, and often do in captivity, but in the wild, there are more dangers and something usually kills them before they can max out their lifespan. Sounds like you've got a lucky little bird there...
What he said.......
Most species of bird can last ten years naturally but dnagers of predators, disease, bb guns, car windshields, etc can shorten that considerably.
A common household pet parakett goes about 14 yrs, and birds like Parrots last 50+years, many out living their owners. But I think the natural life span for a small bird is about the same as a dog or cat.
