Would you buy a real or fake diamond ring?
[QUOTE=vader1,Oct 14 2008, 10:44 AM] If you want a Porsche, period, end of story, then the analogy is the same.
Whether or not you agree with the woman who wants a real stone or not makes no difference.

I thought by law, lab created stones had to disclose they were lab created stones. I think they need to have a marker.

With authentic JDM S2000 parts being another?
I wouldn't consider a lab-made diamond a "fake."
It is a real diamond. I'd have no problem with a lab-made diamond.
Cubic Zirconia being passed off as a diamond? That's a little $30k millionaire for my taste.

The key word is synthetic, not fake. For me, i'd take a synthetic over mined any day (even though I didn't, back when I got engaged--didn't know I had that option).

Using that logic then you may as well buy an 84 Fiero. It gets you from A to B so why buy something more expensive..
The Plorsche analogy is pretty good but Porsche is not creating a market by withholding its supply nor is it creating false marketing and perpetuating its rarity through outright deceit.
Unlike diamonds there is a cornucopia of other cars to give you instant baller status if that is what you are looking for. Buying a Porsche because its a Porsche is making a brand choice not an item choice.
There are brands of diamonds yes but they are all selling the same item just finer cuts, clarity and color.
The fallacy of diamonds is that they are not rare and should not cost anywhere close to what they do. The appeal of diamonds is the cost of them not the rarity or brilliance...SHEEEEIT, even an Austrian crystal will out shine/fire/sparkle any diamond any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
The appeal of diamonds is that everyone knows they are expensive, but why??? Wanting an item solely because it is considered expensive is outright stupidity. If it was the beauty of the thing a person was after then, choose something that is truly more beautiful. Most CZ's will kick a diamonds ass in the beauty department.
Women want diamonds for the status they supposedly bring, nothing more. That to me is a shallow reason to want something so insignificant and my several thousand dollars would be better served by being spent on something significant to the both of us. A cruise or trip, an investment (and no, diamonds are not an investment unless you are a certified diamond broker/wholesaler, the normal consumer cannot make money on diamonds.) a down payment on a major life purchase

If I can get a lab made Porsche which is just as good or better than the real one for a fraction of the cost and the only way you can tell the different is let say a serial number something where most people can't or even pros without the right equipment? Are you serious?
Keep in mind, I could care less about synthetic or not. Cheaper and looks the same or better? Great! Fantastic!!!!
Its still not "real" in the minds of some. And if all you want is "real" then it does not matter. I would have loved to buy a shiney piece carbon made in a lab, but that would not have cut muster. The cheaper the better because I think jewelry is a TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. (no offense jakejewler)
Someone who is a Porschephile, does not want a lab created thing that is the 100% the same if they lust for the real thing. Even if the fake thing is better in every way. I don't understand why that seems hard to understand.
There are lots of cars better than an S2000, but some people will drive nothing else. They just love what they love.

The thinking woman would realize that all that money could be better spent on finer things in life, more important things in life and wear the lab ring (which will most surely out shine and dazzle the masses that see it) knowing secretly inside that the joke is on the rest of the world.
