Would you buy a real or fake diamond ring?

You have to buy a real diamond. I don't know why, I don't get it, I don't like it, but you just do.

If you can't afford a big one, you buy a tiny one.

If you're poor (probably not a lot of poor people on this forum) and your fiance wants to pretend to have baller status for some reason, then maybe you could get away with a fake one.

Otherwise, you bite the bullet and drop the cash on a real diamond. It's a one-time purchase and the fact that it has value makes it more precious to her. There's no point in analyzing it, she's wanted a diamond ring since she was a little girl, so you just do it.

Am I the only one who finds it humorous that I now get a DeBeers ad at the header of each page?

LOL, this is pointless. Either way, DeBeers got us all due to their marketing genius. You're a sucker if you purchase a "real" stone and a scrub/wannabe if you purchase a "fake/lab made" stone.

Do whatever make you or your lady happy. If she want a "real" stone then you have no choice. If you're lucky then there an alternative.

I just think it a shame how some of us completely ignored the marketing schemes and tactics the company used.

I don't see how this is any different than buying a real vs. fake Rolex.

The fakes will tell time just as well and are pretty indistinguishable to the casual observer.

But if you really don't care, then why pose?

It's not like diamonds are the prettiest things out there. Buy her an opal or a sapphire and don't play that game.

Or else, if you have the money, play the game and know that it is part of the game.

How many people buy expensive watches because they tell time better? It's about heritage and artistry and blah, blah. So for those people, I'd imagine a traditional mined diamond would be FTW.

Would depend entirely on the chick. Honestly, I could give a flying ****. I'd prefer to have something like a simple titanium band. Just not into the entirely artificially created demand for a useless product. I mean FFS the industry has even "defined" how much you should spend for you. The idea that you should spend around 12,000 on an engagement ring is just crazy.

Rather than spending that kind of money on a stupid ring I'd much rather go on a long vacation.

Well, I should point out that since the makers of these diamond point out on their websites how they are different and can be distinguished from natural stones but you ignore it must mean you are pretty stupid.

Posted a second time, from the manufacturer of lab created stones:

HPHT created diamonds have metallic inclusions which are never present in natural diamonds. Inclusions, if any, could be visible with a loupe or microscope. So, by studying inclusions a trained gemologist could tell if this particular stone is created or natural. If there are no visible inclusions, one could opt for advanced analytical testing such as X-ray Fluorescence Analysis or Photo Luminescence or Cathodoluminescence Analysis. Those tests could show presence or absence of certain trace elements or reveal the growth history of a diamond.

I have made it pretty clear that I could care less if a diamond is "real" or "synthetic" but it makes a difference to some of the recipients. I see some think it is all marketing BS by DeBeers (which I think is partially true) but fail to realize they fall for the opposing marketing BS that these are EXACTLY 100% like natural stones, when in FACT the companies that make them admit they are not.
Because everyone brings their diamonds to a gemologist for rigorous lab testing.

The fact of the matter is....they look like diamonds, made like diamonds, shine like diamonds, pass for diamonds everywhere but in a lab, and are in fact, diamonds.
