Does not surprise me. When I was 19, a cop pulled me over coming out of a high school football game to search my car for a bottle and did not find one. He charged me with running a stop sign that I sat at for several seconds hooking up my radar detector. He said to me "Who do you think the judge is going to believe?"

20 years later after flipping the bird to some crazy lady tail gaiting the sh*t out of me I was charged with a crime (cliff notes: charges dropped, expunged, misconduct filed against the trooper, and check written to me by the patrol) against the first amendment just to hassle me. I was taunted by the trooper and he was quite a dick. I was truthful, calm and respectful to the guy, but he was really trying to show me who was a tough guy.

Now, if you look on amazon you will find the nifty little dash accident cams for $150 or less. Once they are hard wired they start filming when you start the car, record video and sound on about a 40 minute loop, and if something happens you bookmark that section of video with the push of a button and download it to your computer. Instead of mounting in the open, you can pull them apart a bit, do some soldering and hide the whole setup Chris Hanson style.

I live a mile from the trooper who tried to screw me, so I am waiting to bump into him in the gas station, tell him he is an asshole and see if he tries to follow me and come up with some more bullshit.

Any cops try pull stunts again will be taped and payback will ensue. I am too old to put up with this stuff.

I completely understand your frustration but isn't it illegal to call a cop an ahole to his face?

No.. If there is threatening language along with calling the cop an ahole, then yes..calling the cop an ahole will just aggravate him/her.

No.

The cliff notes version: US Supreme Court in Lewis v City of New Orleans found that cursing at police officers was free speech and people can not be charged. (not saying they won't try but are supposed to be verboten, citing Lewis v New Orleans in front of a judge should get you dismissed on a probable cause motion if you have to go through the trouble) The court said that Police are agents of the government and essentially being harshly critical of them was free political speech. The judgement also said that allowing police to charge someone who verbally lambasted them would give police too much power to just charge anyone they did not like with a crime. The majority opinion stated that officers will encounter such language in normal course of their duties and should be trained to deal with it and have a much higher standard for "fighting words" than the untrained citizen.

My wife did a former stint as a city prosecutor out of law school and cops charge people with this kind of thing all the time, and know they should'nt, but people are too ignorant of the law or scared to push it and just pay the fine. The court takes your money and laughs all the way to the bank.

Threats are a no no, but you can tell a cop he is an ahole if you think he is an ahole.
