What I find somewhat ironic about the success of the "Zombie Pub Crawl" type events is when there are enough "zombies" the people participating have actually turned themselves into the problem the zombie movie is trying to criticize - groupthink and mindless materialism/moralism.
It's cool when it's a handful of friends or maybe twenty people. But when hundreds or thousands of people put on make-up and costumes so they all match when they go out, it loses the edge of social commentary and becomes the case-in-point.

I think you're reading too much in to it. While I'm sure there are some movies that use ZOmbies as social commentary, I think most of the time people are interested in them the same way they are interested in aliens. Just a nifty what-if kind of situation. It's like dressing up as lord of the rings characters. We aren't supporting holy wars or evil demons, we're just looking for a little fantasy fun.

The social commentary was a thing of the times when Romero made the original films. The genre has evolved past that point and if anything, relates to possibility of global contagions that are very real and can decimate the world as we know it.

I have a few plans in mind. Being in Cali, the island of Catalina is just off shore so in the event of Z Day happening, the goal is to make it to that island. Clear out any zombies and live off the land and what it provides.
