That's a cute gif, but it's very biased, it doesn't show your extension, which the arm will have to pull back a lot more than that little tap.

I agree that the arc length (shift travel) will be longer w/ a bigger radius (extension). Thats not my point. My point is that having your shift knob closer to the wheel > the benefit of a shorter shift.

You do know its more important to keep your hand on the 9 & 3 o'clock hand position at all times. If you have a lower knob, the longer it takes to reach for it when its time to shift. And your left with one hand to steer.
I do agree to some extent. Like in full prep race cars where the shifter is really long and easy to reach so the driver can concentrate on steering. But driving on the streets, it's not that important.

The perfect shifter and placement would be like the one on the Carrera GT.

I personally prefer the 10 and 2 positions but I also usually drive with one hand.

Shorter shifts mean you can get on the throttle faster. When you shift you're usually not turning so having to steering with one hand for the second it takes to shift is not a big deal.

I personally prefer heavy knobs since it makes shifter a lot easier and smoother.
