Starter question
Hey guys, I posted this in the "under the hood" section but figured i would ask some local buddies here. Any info is appreciated! Thanks guys.... James
Ok so I have MY 02 with 37k miles, my starter was starting to squeel a little bit every now and then so replaced it. Of course i didn't see the Green Knock sensor and it was broken (not sure by me or my transmission replacement before) but anyways replaced with OEM knock sensor, and got a Duralast starter with lifetime warranty from Autozone bc it was like half the price. Got everything back together and started fine.
Went to start it today to get oil changed at Marysville Honda and it wouldn't start. It was cranking, lights were fine, battery was fine. Tried to jump it and finally got it started. Got to Honda (about 40 min drive) and barely started there. They checked battery and it's perfect, just few months old as well. Checked my charging system diagnosis and all of it is perfect. Said starter is testing fine, but I have a feeling it might be the starter!??? Anyone have any advise or ideas. It's greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

I forgot to add that I didn't get the top starter bolt back in yet either, seems like a lot of people have a problem with that. I'm gonna have to tear the car back apart it seems but let me know if anyone has any ideas. I made sure to hook back all the ground wires too and everything .... Thanks again!
It's possible that with only one bolt holding it in, the torque of the starter motor causes it to move in such a way that it binds and doesn't turn as fast sometimes.
I sent you a PM regarding the installation of the bolt. I hope it made sense. It is much harder to describe than it is to do. PM me back if something doesn't make sense.

Thanks Man, yeah it makes sense, I'll work on trying to take apart the stuff and get that top bolt in this week. I'll have to see though.... If not i can still get it replaced with another new starter.
I was thinking that too if it's binding up or something or it's not exactly lined up since i only have the one bolt it. I know many run with just one but it does make me worry about it. Thanks a ton!!!!

Rebuilt starters are junk. I can't tell you how many I have replaced over the years within 12 months of install. There is probably a bad spot on the winding within the starter or on the armeture. If it's on the bad spot it will be hard to start. This will not show on a test unless the starter is tested while it happens to be at rest on the bad spot.

I think the starter needs to be replaced with a new OEM part.

Ok guys, Just wanted to say thanks for all the responses. I got my starter in the mail today from majestic honda from Rhode Island. They were $80 cheaper than any of the list price for the starter. Got it installed and the car starts in like 1/2 a second now! How crazy that it was all due to the crappy starter. I learned my lesson and glad that every part on the car is still Honda OEM now!!!
Thanks everyone for the help everyone!
DON'T Buy a starter from Autozone - at least not for the S2K!!!
