There is a TSB (04-002) that calls for the replacement of the fuel filler tube on '02 S2000s (and some '03s). For months I had been having problems where the gas cap would get tight and catch when it was only halfway sealed. Even though the top would click, it wouldn't seal and the CEL would come on.

I took it in to the dealer and (per the TSB) they replaced cap and filler tube. It seems that while '02s are otherwise the best model year, they had a slightly defective thread in the fuel filler tube.

If you have anything like a similar problem, get it fixed now, under warranty. And by the way, since this is an emissions item it should be covered for 3yr/50K instead of the general 3yr/36k warranty. Although the dealers may not be clued in on that. Renton Honda (yeah, I went back to them) covered it under "goodwill". If they hadn't, I would have been more forceful about pointing out the emissions warranty.

Thanks for the tip! I have this same problem. Usually it's not a big deal to just keep turning and it will go on, but lately it's been getting really stuck. Time to schedule an appointment w/Honda.
