The plastic ones are to satisfy the bench racers so they can claim the wheels are at least as good as stock but "look way better" (bling, liggy style )
The aluminum ones are indeed to carry load but the amount of "load" where that starts making a difference is not anything you've been experiencing. If you were loading the system w/ enough force to break studs off you'd have lost a wheel way before you broke off the second stud let alone a third.
Missing rings isn't your problem, OVER TORQUING the lug nuts is more likely.
