Now to me, those two dusty room samples don't scream hdr to me at all. Instead they look like over-cooked photo where some simply cranked the highlight and shadow sliders on their software.

Here's one I've done. The difference between the sky and foreground was 9 stops so I had to resort to HDR to get the whole scene at once.

This was the view from my balcony on my honeymoon in Maui.

I honestly think for that shot, there's nothing wrong with everything being shadows
