Ok....let me just clarify what Im looking for...
Im interested in SCRATCHING the strobing surface. It's not REALLY the type of photography I do, but I would like to get into it. However, shooting with the 580 mounted on the hot shoe results in very flat looking, one dimensional images. The reason I wanted a long cord, was so i can hold the flash off to the side by hand, or even have it placed on a light stand for that silhouette effect...one side of light, coming out of the darkness look. I dont want to invest TOO much money in strobing just yet, as there are other lenses I want to get for the type of shooting I love to do...like birds, which is where the 500mm or 400mm boys will come in.
So, now that you know all that, what would be my best bet of firing my 580 off the camera at a distance of anywhere between 5 feet and 10 feet from the camera?
As for the pocket wizards, I still don't get it....As far as I understand, there are two units with antennas...one sits on the camera hot shoe, and the other has a flash plugged into it. When the camera clicks, the signal from the hot shoe goes to the sending unit, out the antenna, into the antenna of the receiving unit, thus, firing the flash...so how can you have only one unit do both?

You can't, you need two -- but each device can do both job. e.g. if you switch the device on the flash and the one on your camera they'll still work.
I still don't know what I want to do with getting my damn flash off camera...

Cheap remote trigger here.. Got mine, replaced the CR2 battery in this thing and though it's not perfect (misfires occasionally), it's still good enough for my amateur ass
