I have seen systems that were supposed to use Dot 3 that upon using Dot 4, it caused seals to swell and required replacement of all the seals in the system. Stock fluid is fine, just change it regularly. Mopac and other places have higher performance Dot 3 as well.

I've used Hawk HP+ and HPS pads in a couple of cars and the performance was really good.

I have used factory dot 3, dot 4, 5.1, and rbf 600.

No issues with seals etc.

You're lucky. It was a weird diagnosis and a time consuming repair!

dot 3 4 and 5.1 are all glycol based...ie. the same shit. only difference is higher number means higher specs. they can all be mixed without any concerns.
dot 5 is the one to avoid as its silicone based and not meant for use in regular cars. im positive this is what vtrgary is referring to.

if u have to ask what fluid to run, the answer for u is ate superblue. that stuff is good enough for track use, yet lasts 3x longer than oem fluid. its also cheap. only problem with it is that every time i want some, i end up phoning 8 different shops in town before finding some. its what i use in all my cars, all the time.

Actually, it was a Quartermaster Clutch (http://tinyurl.com/3sl2fqm) Really slick unit. Using Quartermaster's own master and slave cylinders. Since the Tilton brake master cylinders in the same car used DOT 4 brake fluid, it was decided that we should simplify things and just run DOT 4 in everything, despite the QM bits suggesting D3 only.

After frequent clutch issues and pointing the finger at everything else in the system, we rebuilt the quartermaster clutch master and slave cylinders in the racecar and used only DOT3. There was no contamination so all we could come up with was that while D4 is supposed to be reverse compatible, it isn't fully. Everything has worked perfectly since!

As for suggestions, I've used Wilwood, ATE, Motul, Honda, Castrol and others - the most important thing with all of them is that they be changed out regularly. Whatever you use, if you're beating hard on your brakes, change it often. Use good fluid, change it regularly!
