Finally made time today to track down the wiring problem that was preventing my high-mount brake light from working. As there was no current in one of the wires at the connector, the obvious cause was a broken or shorted wire. Started by pulling the wiring from inside the trunk lid cavity and checking for potential problem areas...everything looked fine until I got to the trunk hinge. Although there was plenty of slack in the wiring/sheathing, it was worn and crushed/damaged from repeated rubbing up against the left trunk hinge. Peeled everything back and there it was...a clean break in one of the two wires for the high-mount light. Did a quick splice and tested the light...it works. Need to get a proper connector tomorrow to do a permanent fix and put eveything back in place.
I never carry anything in my trunk other than groceries, a set of golf clubs or a gym bag...none of which would come in contact with the wiring where the break occured. Might be worth checking to see if your sheathing is damaged to avoid the same problem.
The photo shows the location of the break...unfortunately I didn't take a shot of the crushed sheathing before removing it.
Love you all. Just uncovered the wires at the trunk hinge to the high mount brake light, found a break in one wire right at the hinge, spliced in a new section of wire and, sure enough, the light now works. Sure beads the $325 that a national tire chain wanted to fix it in order for the car to pass inspection. Thanks again.
