So how is the value of a car determined???

I'd suspect that if Honda did kill off the S2000 at the end of 03, the value of them would have been still pretty good.

Pretty sure Kenny was talking about the trade in value and not the market value.

I wouldn't trust my car on a used car lot but that's just me. I haven't had too many problems selling my cars in the past, it basically came down to $$$.

Blackbook prices are determined via car auctions and are published weekly. However, a good used car buyer will pay much less than blackbook price.

$28K is way too low for an 02' (most mid - higher mileage 00's still sell for this). I have not seen one 02' priced this low regardless of condition and mileage. $35K is probably more like it.
I know you have not seen too many 02's priced that low, but if you check autotrader week after week and other used car listings, you will see those vehicles are not selling.

I'm just saying if you want the car to sell rather than trying to get as much as you can and end up holding the car for 8 - 10 months you need to price it (or at least be willing to sell for) at 28k. Perhaps try listing at 30k and see what offers you get. 35k is too much for a 2002.

I sold my stock 00' with 19K less than a year ago for $36K. How is $35K too much for an 02' when I got $36K for my 00' only 10 months ago ? Maybe you would not pay $35K but that does not mean others would not.

at the end of '03 I even received more than that for a trade-in value on my '01. And it had 60,000 km and was not in near as good of condition as seks' car.

10 months ago was before the big price drop of s2000s. I can't explain it but for some reason during the fall of 2004 the price of used s2000s just started dropping pretty significantly. If I "had to" pay $35k for my S I would pay it because its a great car and I think I would still be satisfied with my purchase.

My whole point is not what you feel the car is worth. The numbers I am posting are what I think that are realistic in terms of having a quick sale. Post a MY02 s2000 on autotrader for $35k and you will still have it in a year. Post it for about $30k with some room to move and you will have a lot more interest. At some point in the game you have to accept the fact that depreciation has hit hard in the last year.

During the spring of 2004, the average MY02 s2000 was selling in the 40s. Not quite sure what caused the big plummet during the fall though would love to hear explanations.

A good used S2000 has always sold for 35-40k, even as far back as 2002.

Where we're seeing some disparity is on the '00 - '01 model that has more than 60-80km on it, they're all going for 25 to 30k.

There have only been a few S2000's for less than 30k, and rarely in Alberta. Mostly in Quebec, a province notorious for lower than average used vehicle prices...
